Before surgery on his hand a man asked, "Will I be able to play the piano after surgery, doc?" The doctor assured him he would still be able to play piano after the surgery. To which the man replied, "Good, I've always wanted to play the piano." I took this "dad" joke and looked a little deeper. Most of us have dreams of what we want to do "someday." Hopes and dreams are usually put away on a shelf in your mind and you have comfort in knowing you can get them out "when the time is right." The sad fact is that most people breathe their last breath with those hopes and dreams still sitting on that dusty closet shelf. I challenge you to get one or two of your "someday" dreams out and start working on them. I'm dusting off an old skill that I never fully developed and after several decades I'm now going to learn it well.…

He made it to shore, but he discovered he had broken his back. He still had use of his legs, but the doctors said the only option was to fuse his spine and that he'd never surf or run again. They told him his only other option was to be confined to a wheelchair. Vinny decided to look for other options that didn't end with him being immobile for life. He went for years and tried all kinds of alternative treatments. He was able to walk, but walking was always painful. Then he met a man who was a bodyworker. After the first session, Vinny realized it was the first time in years he'd been able to move without pain. He continued learning how to move his body and made a full recovery. Now Vinny is training for a fifty-mile ultramarathon trail race. And he started the Pain Academy, teaching others how to relieve pain through natural movements.…

Imagine what it would be like to plan a big goal for your 60th birthday. It should be something epic and noteworthy. After all, turning sixty is a milestone. Will Turner decided that the year he turned sixty he would do sixty Ironman triathlons. A full Ironman is 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles on a bike, and running 26.2 miles. This is the nickname for the course. It sounds simple. Run a mile every 20 minutes. There's only 300 feet of elevation gain and loss. If you aren't at the start line every 20 minutes, you DNF. The race lasts until there is only one runner left. Becca Jones came up with the Mid-State mile in 2020. Tennessee limited people gathering except for funerals and weddings. Two friends stepped up and said, we can have our wedding and the race will be our reception party. With the legal hurdles out of the way, Becca and her family outlined the race course and sent out invitations. The race was a huge success. It is a brutal course, with all of the elevation in one hill that's a 20% grade. This race and the Tennessee mile, a timed race, will soon be one of the bucket list races for serious ultra runners. Becca is also an ultra runner and running coach. She shares great stories and her perspective on training and running far.…

Randy was an athlete in high school and college, but not specifically a runner. For a period of time he fell out of doing much physical activity, though he enjoyed hiking and rock climbing with his wife. When he was 34, he was brainstorming with his wife about a goal to work toward and she immediately said “You’ve always said you’ve wanted to run a marathon and you’ve never done one.” That wasn’t what he was expecting...or wanting to hear...but he signed up for one that was just three months away! He was running with the pace setter when some others started dropping out, so the pacer gave him the pacing stick and dropped back to provide encouragement. He knows that is what kept him in the race and to this day still thinks that was the most painful experience. The year, 2020, may be remembered as the year of the FKT because so many races were canceled and ultra runners were looking for a new challenge. Brittany Peterson and Cody Lind decided to go after the FKT for the 310-mile-long Superior Hiking Trail in northern Minnesota. Brittany and Cody are ultra runners with a long list of races to their credit, including many first place finishes. They set the new FKT for the Superior Hiking Trail at 4 days, 9 hours, beating the previous men's record by 18 hours and women's record by 2 days. Both are running coaches and they have a passion to see runners succeed at every level, from the elite to those chasing cutoff times. The website says about this race: "This is one of the more physically demanding trails in the East, and it remains a significant unprotected wilderness area.
