Manage episode 448781843 series 3573564
Sue Schneider, a medical anthropologist, integrative health coach, and author of the book Meeting the Moment with Kindness: How Mindfulness Can Help Us Find Calm, Stability, and an Open Heart, joins us to explore the power of mindfulness in navigating life's big transitions. With roots in a small Jewish community in Kansas and her journey through Eastern spirituality and yoga, Sue shares how these experiences have shaped her understanding of mindfulness. Her unique perspective offers invaluable insights into managing the chaos of post-election stress and holiday gatherings with calmness and compassion.
Together, we uncover how mindfulness can transform midlife transitions into opportunities for growth and resilience. Addressing the ever-present stressors of modern life, such as political unrest and natural disasters, we discuss the significance of engaging the parasympathetic nervous system to combat chronic stress. Practical techniques, including the STOP method, are introduced to help cultivate a mindful approach to daily challenges, enhancing both our physiological and psychological well-being.
Family dynamics often present their own set of challenges, and mindfulness can be a transformative tool. We tackle the complexities of internal family systems and how mindfulness can assist in managing triggers and past traumas during family gatherings. By fostering a compassionate relationship with ourselves, we can handle life's transitions—from health issues to relationship changes—authentically and kindly. The conversation concludes with reflections on how self-compassion and mindful aging can guide us toward living with intention and gratitude.
