What's New in the 303:

Coaching Tip of the Week:

6. Name at least three reasons that a triathlete might get injured? (3 points; 1 paragraph)

Triathletes are at higher risk for injury due to the nature of the sport, the attitude of triathletes and a lack of proactive education.

Nature of the Sport

As a stamina sport, it requires a high volume of training to develop endurance, speed and strength. With high training volume comes the risk of overuse injuries. All three underlying sports of swim, bike and run are sagittal plane movements that result in a loss of frontal plane stability and muscle weakness.

Attitude of Triathletes

Triathletes also tend to think more training is better and that taking a day off is a sign of weakness. A lack of awareness of what causes injury can be a reason an athlete gets injured. Coaches should proactively discuss what causes injury with their athletes and the steps they can take to prevent them.

Proactive Education

The athlete should have a basic understanding that increasing training stress too fast, whether by volume or intensity, can cause an overuse injury. Having a underlying and undiagnosed functional strength, position or activation issue can also be a reason a triathlete might get injured.
