In the second of our ongoing series on mothers in politics, we're talking to Dr. Kim Schrier, the first pediatrician in Congress, who represents Washington's 8th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. She's telling us how she pivoted from a medical career to a political one, what it's like to sponsor a bill on vaccines that ends up taking on new meaning when a pandemic hits, and why it's important for other parents to seek elected office.
Congresswoman Kim Schrier, MD represents Washington State’s 8th Congressional District. Prior to being elected to Congress on November 6, 2018, she spent her career as a pediatrician in Issaquah, WA, working with children and helping families navigate the health care system. As the first pediatrician in Congress, Rep. Schrier brings a critical voice to issues related to health care. Through her own experience as a patient living with Type 1 diabetes, she understands the very real fear of health care costs and access for people living with pre-existing conditions. After graduating from U.C. Berkeley Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in Astrophysics, Rep. Schrier spent a year working at the EPA before attending medical school at U.C. Davis School of Medicine. She completed her residency at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University. In 2013, she was named Best Pediatrician in the Greater Seattle Area by Parents Map Magazine. Rep. Schrier lives in Sammamish, WA with her husband, David, and son, Sam.
