Sharing Stories to Heal: A Season of Male Survivors

Welcome to Season 3, which is dedicated to male survivors and giving male survivors a place for healing, support, and resources. In this episode, Candace speaks with Neil Parekh, a marketing and communications professional who is gifted at sharing the power of story. Listen in as Neil tells his own story of abuse and healing.

Candace and Neil met at a conference centering around domestic violence and sexual assault. They explain how a call to action set them on a journey of giving male survivors a voice. They discuss Neil's journey and the important work of advocacy and sharing the stories of male survivors.

Candace is happy to announce that Neil will be her new co-host for Season 3 to help facilitate difficult but important conversations with male survivors.

Episode Highlights:

14:17 - I don't remember. There was no reporting. There was no counseling. There was no discussion. There was nothing that happened afterward.

18:14 - As you start to come out with your story, you start to carry a personal responsibility. If this journey of my own has taught me anything, it's to help others tell theirs. Even if you tell one person, you get it off your chest and feel just a little bit better.

19:22 - Talk about advocacy journey and healing journey. They build off each other.

22:27 - There were times when these memories would come flooding back and grab a hold of me, but I didn't really contend with it.

26:33 - If you pause and things slow down, you start to think and reflect, and that's where sometimes I go into my dark hole.

43:28 - I'm thankful I don't have to live with this alone. I'm thankful I don't have to bury it and pretend it didn't happen and just not know what impact it has had.
