Episode 117: Recommitting Ourselves to Step 3 of the Twelve Steps of Adult Children of Alcoholics
Manage episode 423512709 series 3363982
I personally find Step Three to be difficult:
Step 3: Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understand God.
I struggle with the need to let go and take a leap of faith. It's not easy for me and I am often conflicted about this step, but I still try.
From "The 12 Steps for Adult Children" book (1991 reprinted version):
"Step Three commands more of us than the first two Steps, because we are now asked to trust in a Higher Power. If we feel pressured or compromised by this request we are going too fast. Our inner child may be terrified that, if we dare trust a Higher Power and expose our behavior problems to that Power, we will be rejected. In this case, it is important to stop and take time to prepare ourselves properly."
And another powerful quote:
"The key to effectively working Step Three lies in our willingness to turn as much of our lives as we can over to the care of God. This is difficult for many of us because we are accustomed to functioning by using self-will alone."
