Jesus’ ascent of the mountain and his teaching from it symbolize his role as King delivering the kingdom's principles. This sermon is primarily for his disciples—those who have committed to follow him—rather than the broader crowd. Jesus’ authority is comprehensive: moral, legal, and judicial, but it is expressed through his grace and gentleness. The central task for believers is to come to Jesus, accept his teachings, and live under his rule. II. Draw Near to the Mountain Exodus 19 describes how God gave the Law to Moses on Mount Sinai, an event marked by fear and boundaries to protect the people from God's overwhelming holiness. In contrast, Jesus’ ascent in Matthew 5 signifies a new way of drawing near to God. Unlike Sinai, which was marked by terror and distance, Jesus invites his disciples to come close and receive his teachings graciously. This new approach is not about achieving perfection but about drawing near to God in Christ and living according to his teachings. Jesus, as the true King and Prophet, transforms the way we relate to God, moving from fear and separation to intimacy and grace. The sermon is a call to approach Jesus as the ultimate authority who brings good news and salvation, offering a transformative path to living in God's kingdom.
