Excessive Emphasis On The External Rather Than The Internal “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.” Matthew 23:25 2. Treats God As A Distant Taskmaster Rather Than A Loving Father “So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” Romans 8:15 (NLT) 3. Promotes Spiritual Pride “Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else: 10 “Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! 12 I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income. 13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ 14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Luke 18:9-14 (NIV) 4. Moved By Traditions Rather Than God’s Power “Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat! 3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?” Matthew 15:1-3 (NIV) WHAT IS THE PURITY OF THE GOSPEL? “For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.21 But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago. 22 We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.” Romans 3:20-22 (NLT) 1. You Can’t Be Made Right With God With Behavior “For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands…” Romans 3:20 (NLT) 2. The Law Only Shows Us Our Need For A Savior “The law simply shows us how sinful we are.” Romans 3:20 (NLT) 3. Right Standing With God Comes By Faith In Christ Alone “We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.” Romans 3:22 (NLT) ............................
