So, you think you know the ninja turtles?
Well, guess again! Until you've read the dark, gritty, sloppy origin of those media sensations, you don't know squat! No pizza! All-red bandanas! No quippy teen catchphrases, and pseudo-zen martial arts nonsense philosophy in their place! NO. PIZZA.
If you understand that true love comes only with true understanding, consider reading along as we discuss Eastman & Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Color Classics, #1-4, as well as the TMNT Color Classics Micro-series #1: Raphael (which goes between issues #3 & 4).
If you want to hear more about representation of Asian characters, stories, and tropes in Western media from actual Asian or Asian-American people*, consider the following resources that have helped shape our understanding (these do not necessarily represent our opinions--rather, they contribute to a constructive conversation on the topic):
-Cultural Inspirations in Avatar, Book 1 (and sequels), by Xiran Jay Zhao [YouTube video]
-Lost In the 90s: Struggling to Find Asian American Representation When There Was None, by Ariel Dean [article on syfy.com]
-Asian Representation in Movies: Have Things Changed Since 1997?, by Isabella Chua [data analysis article on kontinentalist.com]
-*Has the Word "Ninja" Been Culturally Appropriated? [article on dictionary.com, *unknown if the writer is of Asian heritage, but take this as a dictionary reference]
Next week we will be reading Kitty Pryde & Wolverine #1-6. We invite you to read along with us.
Monte's theme this season is Superhero Mentor/Mentee Relationships. Veronica's theme is 90s Movie Properties.
