As Valentine’s Day approaches, love is in the air. What is the secret to love that lasts? According to Gary Chapman, it’s knowing your love language as well as your partner or spouse’s love language. In today’s episode, I will explain the 5 Love languages related to couples in relationships from his book, The 5 Love Languages: The Secret To Love That Lasts. The 5 Love Languages according to Gary Chapman are: Words of Affirmation Quality Time Receiving Gifts Acts of Service Physical Touch Learning the right love language is key to helping your spouse or partner feel loved AND you will reap the benefits as you will also feel loved in return. The need to feel emotionally loved is universal. To feel loved is a primary human emotional need. When your emotional love tank or bank account is full, you act differently. It is as important in a marriage to keep your love tank full as it is to keep your gas tank full of gas or having money in your bank account. It keeps you going. So this Valentines Day, understand not only your primary love language but also your spouse or partner’s primary love language then act on what would fill their love tank or love account. If you do, your love tank or love account will be full. Your life will be positively transformed. I recently read a quote attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt, “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.” Socrates has a similar quote using strong, average and weak minds. This quote suggests that the quality of a person’s thinking is reflected in the type of topics they engage with. In this episode, I’m going to share with you a few of my thoughts I had after reading this quote. I’m going to describe what I think it means and share some examples and visuals to go with them. Small minds are similar to adolescent brains--immature, emotionally reactive, focused on others, criticize without action, and obsessed with social media. Average minds are what most people have--focused on daily tasks and routines, engaged in superficial conversations, and have limited to no time for deeper reflection. Great minds are leaders and visionaries--curious, lifelong learners, take action and risks, live to make a positive difference and impact on the world around them. Our brain is an extraordinary tool. It has built-in tendencies that, when understood and used wisely, can be leveraged to improve our behavior and help us achieve the things we truly desire. We often already know what to do; it’s the doing part that trips us up. In fact, one of our brain’s fundamental functions is to help us avoid pain, which keeps us alive. However, it’s also wired to think of the worst-case scenario when we ask ourselves, "What if?" In this episode, I’m going to take a closer look at these natural tendencies and explore how we can use them to our advantage, especially when it comes to exercise, eating well, finances, and relationships. Dr. Pamela Stoodley has asked these questions and more then sought out to find the answers. Last week Brendon Burchard did a training on New Year's Day that included what he considers 4 Life Stages. 1) Mimicry & Belonging--Mimicry is copying or imitating. Belonging is connection and love. 2) Rebellion & Independence--Rebellion is resistance. Independence is not being influenced by others. 3) Rhythm & Hustle--Rhythm is routine, rituals or habits. Hustle is being busy, working quickly, or feeling like you are behind. 4) Renewal & Leadership--Renewal is reinvention or resetting. Leadership refers to both self and social leadership. These 4 Life Stages are not sequential but rather are concepts or ideas of how people learn, interact and could describe various times in people's lives. In this episode, I will define and give examples of these 4 Life Stages. I want you to think about these stages and ask yourself some questions. Where can you see yourself in these stages? What examples from your own life can be related to these stages? Are there some stages that you want to be in more? How about less? What is one thing you need to do to be fully present in the stage of life you want to be in right now? We all cycle in and out of Brendon’s 4 stages of life: mimicry & belonging, Rebellion and Independence, Rhythm and Hustle, Renewal and Leadership. All are necessary and are not all bad for us. All these stages teach us something. Life is full of stages and choices. I hope you choose to be more fully present and intentional in whatever stage you are in to experience life to its fullest.
