Joining Am Bush in conversation is Hank Willis Thomas, an artist from the Upper Westside of New York City. Hank has an exhibit coming up at the Portland Art Museum that celebrates 20 years of his work. Invited by curators such as Julia Dolan and Sarah Jeski. Influenced by his mother growing up who is also a photographer, Hank was exposed to black photographers in an era where art - especially black art was just beginning to break free.
From the mind of a man who doesn’t believe in race but believes race was created to categorize us on opposite sides of each other. Hank shares with us a humbling perspective of his work and ability. He says “I just kind of do things” and “embrace an artist that doesn’t kind of check an easy box”. Hank and Am Bush also discuss a few of Hank's pieces, such as his sculpture “Rise Up” at the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama. Hearing Hank and Am Bush not only pow wow about his life as a photographer but the influence their upbringings had on them as a generation, it is something you truly don’t wanna miss.
