Ep. 93 - Talking to Your Kids about Puberty and a Follow Up with Dr. Mandy Yunker
Manage episode 309949981 series 3043966
Heyyyyyy everybody! Happy Monday! It’s a GREAT Monday, because Dr. Mandy is back in the houuuuuse!!! We loved having her for episode 87 to discuss women’s reproductive health (and got such great feedback), that we had to have her back to talk about puberty! All the things… what to expect, what is actually happening, and most importantly, how to explain it to our kids!! Another great episode here… y’all are gonna love listening as much as we did taping!
Even though Dr. Mandy is the real expert around here today, Jennifer has walked through this talk twice now with her daughters, the most recent being just three weeks ago. Both times she used the American Girl books - The Care & Keeping of You Book 1 and Book 2. In this episode, you’ll get to hear what she liked about them (and the one thing she didn’t), and how those talks went!!
Dr. Mandy mentioned and got input from her colleague, Celeste Hemingway, MD, who practices general obstetrics and gynecology, but primarily sees pediatric and adolescent gynecology patients (yes, it’s a thing!). They recommend the following resources:
It’s So Amazing! : A Book About Eggs, Sperm, Birth, Babies and Families
It’s Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing Up, Sex and Sexual Health
It’s Not the Stork! : A Book about Girls, Boys, Babies, Bodies, Families and Friends
Girlology.com offers webinars (and lots of additional resources) on the topics of puberty, nutrition, emotional health, and overall wellness.
Vanderbilt Kennedy Center also offers a multitude of resources addressing puberty with children with special needs. We had no idea this existed, and we think this is amazing!!
Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood
These are all such amazing resources! We are so grateful to know these and pass them along to you!
From our “I’m Totally Into…” segment:
Mandy is totally into her non-slipping Lululemon Yoga Mat! (And hot yoga at Fahrenheit Yoga!)
Courtney is totally into McGee & Co. rugs (and their whole store in general)… excellent customer service!
Jennifer is totally into OPI Nail Lacquer in “Don’t Bossa Nova Me Around”… such a great summer neutral!
And we are announcing our next podcast club installment! Take an hour or so in the next couple of weeks and listen to The Lazy Genius Podcast episodes on routines - Ep. 58 Morning Routines & Ep. 59 Evening Routines. We will be discussing these in an upcoming episode! But don’t worry - you have plenty of time!
And lastly, don’t forget to be reading Make Something Good Today by Erin & Ben Napier! That book club episode is coming really soon!!
We hoped you loved our time with Dr. Mandy! Please let us know of any questions you may have for her. And let us know what you learned!! Thanks, Dr. Mandy!!! Have a great week, mamas!
