Jesus interprets the character/purpose of the meal as a covenant-making event. This covenant is one that Jesus is making with every person who is unable to save himself, who is unworthy to sit at the table and partake with Christ, he is not able to make himself good enough or valuable enough to sit at the table with Jesus. Jesus blood and sacrifice allow us to be friends of Jesus, to belong to Jesus. This is what qualifies.
It doesn’t seem like many, if any, of the twelve disciples were qualified to eat with Jesus. Judas was there, he was going to betray Jesus. Peter was about to deny Jesus.
Our worthiness is not based on our ability to live a sinless life, and it’s not based on being able to perfectly evaluate whether we have some sin and perfectly repent. It isn’t humanly possible to perfect any of these things. Not to say that we shouldn’t strive for perfection, that is definitely the goal.
When we partake of the Lord’s supper we remember what Jesus has done, we repent of known sin (as we are able to), we remember that He is coming again and we renew our commitment to love and follow Jesus.
