Season 5 Podcast 120 Book of Revelation Chapter 9 “Opening of the Seven Seals, E, “The Seventh Seal, The Bottomless Pit.”

In the previous podcast entitled ‘Opening of the Seven Seals D, we examined the first four angels of the Seventh Seal. In this podcast we shall continue with the opening of the seven seals of the Seventh Seal.

Revelation 9:1

1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.

The above is highly symbolic. After the seventies returned from their mission saying, “Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name,” Christ said unto them,

Luke 10:18-20

“I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.”

Satan is permitted on earth only because a choice between good and evil is necessary for agency to exist. The power of Satan is limited by God. Satan does not hold any keys. He acts by permission only. We are told in Revelation 20 who actually holds the keys.

Revelation 20:1-3

“And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.”

John records that a ‘star fell from heaven.” Isaiah refers to Satan as “son of the morning.” The reference in Revelation 9:1, if it is speaking of Satan, can only imply that Satan was allowed to leave his prison for a brief time. Isaiah refers to Satan as a fallen angel.

Isaiah 14:12

“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!”

In Revelation 12 John, speaking of Lucifer, records that “his tail drew a third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth.” A few verses later he records,

Revelation 12:9

“And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”

The lesson, however, has a double meaning. John tells us,

Revelation 12: 7

“And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels.”

In the War in Heaven, Satan recruited the other spirits. Those who followed him became sons of perdition. On earth, Satan and the other sons of perdition, all spirits, continue the war; however, they recruit mortals who in heaven rejected them to join their army. In heaven the spirits knowingly followed Satan. That is why they were sons of perdition. On earth many who rejected Satan in the war in heaven unknowingly join his army on earth. We can assume the things that follow symbolically refer to wars caused by man.

Revelation 9:2-3

“And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.”

Satan’s army is limited in power, proving that he does not have as much power over man as he thinks. Satan is permitted on earth for only one reason and that is that mankind might have agency.
