All About Change
Vicki Sokolik refuses to be an Ostrich. Her son brought to her attention the crisis of unhoused youth — youth unhoused, not living with a parent/guardian, and not in foster care — in America, and she has been fighting to support this vulnerable population every since. Most active in Tampa Bay, Florida, Vicki is the founder and CEO of the nonprofit Starting Right, Now, which removes barriers for unaccompanied homeless youth to cultivate long-term well-being and self-sufficiency. She is also the author of the new book, “If You See Them: Young, Unhoused, and Alone in America.” Vicki Sokolik joined host Jay Ruderman to discuss the many ways unhoused youth fall through the cracks in our society, how her organization helps them, and also how to build trust with people who could use your help. Episode Chapters (00:00) Intro (01:10) Vicki’s origin story (02:40) What is “unhoused youth?” (06:40) What should a person do if they worry they see an unhoused youth? 1:07:57On the first episode PodStance: The PunkStance Podcast in 2025, I talk to the latest in a long line of pop-punk fans Samia. Also, known as Lyrical Lies, Samia approached me through Reddit to discuss her love for the UK's very own pop-punkers You Me At Six and her journey from Southern Iraq to Illinois in America. Following a strict upbringing, pop-punk allowed Samia to express herself in her own idiosyncratic way, though that didn't stop her respecting her heritage. We talk about everything from parental guidance to limited edition band merch, the English monarchy and even different types of tea; a very English conversation indeed. Thank you very much to Samia for coming on the show and I wish you all the best in the future. On the final episode of 2024, PunkStance is joined by his good friend George Rutt to host the first official Live Live Show Show of 2024. This is a round-up of every gig, concert and experience that music played a vital role in throughout the year; everything from a mountain climb to the Beer and Cider Festival are discussed in the unscripted ode to the world of live pop-punk music. I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported me and this page over 2024. This has been a huge year for PunkStance and I couldn't do any of this without your endless support, so thank you all so much for continuing to listen. Please enjoy this final episode of 2024; let's have some laughs, feel the nostalgia and I'll see you all on the other side. 44:09On the latest episode of PodStance: The PunkStance Podcast, I speak with Yellowcard fan Daphne Sullivan. While sitting in her car, Daphne discusses her love for the band's 2012 record Southern Air and the impact it has had on her life. From her travels across the US in a mountaineering troop to her time at a myriad of festivals, Daphne is a pop-punk lover with plenty of stories to share. Moreover, we delve into the anxieties of life and the alterations and changes the pop-punk genre has gone through, each subject just as interesting as the last. Thank you very much to Daphne for coming on the show and sharing her stories, and Happy Holidays to everyone! 1:00:12On the latest episode of Release Ramble, I am joined by Brandon and Thomas of the pop-punk group Picking Up Pedro. Originally based in Florida, this dynamic duo released their first self-titled EP a decade ago back in 2014, but after ten years worth of adventures and stories, they are back with their latest single 'Break up the Wedding'. This was a fantastic conversation with two very passionate lads, both of which delved into their respective roles in the band. From the hidden meanings in their lyrics to the inception of their latest single's lead riff, this discussion is centred on their musical talents. Not only that, but if you want to know where the band name "Picking Up Pedro" came from, you're only going to find it here. Thank you so much to Thomas and Brandon for coming on the show and I look forward to seeing what Picking Up Pedro have in store for next year. 1:00:00On the latest episode of PodStance: The PunkStance Podcast, I am welcomed by writer, hospitality expert and soon-to-be sister-in-law Rebekah Lee. Following her introduction in the recent Slam Dunk Special episode, Becka wanted to discuss her own musical interests, specifically the band Against The Current and their plethora of material over the last ten years. From getting stuck in Leeds in the middle of winter to her upbringings in Buckinghamshire and Lincoln, we delve into the journey she has taken so far and the impact this pop-punk band has had on that very journey. We also touch on the connection both Becka and Against The Current's frontwoman Chrissy Costanza have in terms of grief and the acceptance of death, a very heavy but necessary conversation. Thank you so much to Bekah for coming on and I'll see you at the next family dinner. 1:13:47On the latest episode of Release Ramble, I talk to the frontman of Los Angeles melodic hardcore band Oceans Away. Robbie indulges us in his unique experiences as a band member, quite literally travelling across the world to find his place in the industry. From LA to Munich, the conception of this band is rooted in his travels and it was an incredible story to listen to. Every song captures a moment of this pilgrimage, but their latest track, appropriately titled 'TRANSATLANTIC' sheds light on the creation of Oceans Away and the stories they have today. Not only that, but Robbie and I delve into our own experiences of living with anxiety; from medication to overpowering your fears, this was a grounded and touching discussion about mental health and the power music can have on two different people on opposite sides of the world. Thank you so much to Robbie for coming on the show and I look forward to seeing what Oceans Away has in-store for 2025. 1:15:25On the latest episode of PodStance: The PunkStance Podcast, I speak with artist, merchandise man and all-round music industry guru Dave Shirkhani. From his humble rhythmic beginnings in Virginia to his contemporary work in Portland, Oregon, Dave and I float through his life as a lover of pop-punk and his career within it. Everything from the moguls of the golden era to the underground UK scene make an appearance, as well as the usual unrelated and engaging topics like Resident Evil II, the concept of "Corporate America" and getting stoned. This was an excellent chat with a fascinating man, and I want to thank Dave for taking the time to share his experiences with me. 1:18:28At long last, I am back following a brief hiatus, so thank you all for your patience. On the 12th episode of PodStance: The PunkStance Podcast, I reward your patience and am joined by a previous guest, one who wanted an episode all to themselves; bassist of both The New Normal and Loss Of Signal Carlin Brown. With discussions about grief, relationships, anxiety and positive mental attitudes, Carlin and I soar across a plethora of mental health topics, all wrapped up in an upbeat and engaging discussion about his love for rock music. Spanning the late 70s to the modern day, Carlin's influences are all-encompassing and made for one of my most interesting podcasts to date. Huge thank you to Carlin for coming back on the show and I'll see you all on the other side. If you're interested in the PunkStance page, click the link here: https://www.instagram.com/punk.stance/…

Their debut EP 'Not Yours' released back in October of 2023, and since then the band have experienced all kinds of twists and turns in their ever-growing career, each of which we discuss in detail. Moreover, we talk about the comparison between digital and physical music in the modern era as well as the internal politics of Ireland that has influenced not just The New Normal, but a myriad of Irish punk rock. 1:11:33On this fifth episode of Release Ramble, I have the pleasure of talking with Chicago pop-punk quartet Farhampton. Following the release of their latest single 'Wishful Thinking', the band were ready and raring to talk about the meaning behind their new track. We delve into everything from personal grief to recent heartbreaks and illustrate just how wide-reaching the themes and instrumentation of the song are. Outside of that, we talk the "Chicago Rathole", football hooliganism and my previous YouTube video about them even gets a cheeky mention, much to my dismay. A huge thank you to Farhampton for joining me on the show and I am very much looking forward to seeing what else they have in store for us fellow pop-punk fans. Following the release of his live Southampton Sessions back in December, Charlie discusses the cut-throat industry that is independent music, the weird and wonderful world of contemporary music streaming and gives a brief insight into the future of his work. From touring in North England to his upcoming double single, Charlie is as busy and as talented as independent artists come, and it was a pleasure to have him on the show. 1:01:30On this tenth episode of PodStance: The PunkStance Podcast, the titular host is riding solo once again as a result of having COVID. Following a 3-week hiatus, PunkStance is back to talk about the records that shaped his time in lockdown back in 2020. From the pop-punk powerhouses of Four Year Strong and Knuckle Puck to the underground darlings of Lightweights and A Dangerous Affair, PunkStance mentions every song and album that helped him endure the trials and tribulations of the pandemic. With the lockdown being what inspired the conception of PunkStance in the first place, it seems fitting to delve into where it all began while he remains quarantined, just be sure to keep your distance (that goes for when he doesn't have COVID too). We go into details about the single, what's next for the band and even get an exclusive drop about some upcoming events. Mix that with some foul-mouthed giggles and what it's like to be a new band in the UK, and you have a fantastic conversation with a band who are just happy to be where they are.
