Show Notes: What do you do when no matter your effort or your dreaming, life sends you a curveball that makes your dreams impossible? Would just contending for those dreams be enough for you? Or, if you’re a bit more like me, would that be a bit tortuous? The hard part about these questions is I think you don’t really know the answer until you’re in a moment like that. In the episode today I share how I think I might understand a bit what that would be like because of my wife and I's battle with infertility the past 8 years, but our guest today knows exactly what striving for impossible dreams feels like. She’s had her share of moments in her life where no matter her effort and sacrifice, life and God had other plans for her. Our guest today is Kitty Robinson. She said "I do" to her high school sweetheart, Casey, 27 years ago. As a heart and brain surgery survivor and homeschooling mom of 8 (insert survivor status here, too!), her life path has had some unusual turns. She's currently walking that path out in Middle Georgia, where she writes, runs, and coaches. On the show today we discuss the following: Who is Kitty and her story (7:31) Did Kitty see her pride while going through her challenges? (13:04) How Kitty was able to set aside her pride (15:32) Why she considers her life more abundant after her trials (22:04) Submission as the path to peace (29:27) Why she chose a life of quiet impact (39:41) How her definition of Courage has changed (45:01) What does it mean to Kitty to be a Contender (49:03) How to learn more about Kitty: Kitty's Website: http://www.kittyrobinson.com/ Kitty's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/kitty.robinson.31 Kitty's Book: "Somtimes Courage" - https://www.amazon.com/Sometimes-Courage-runners-journey-sometimes/dp/170978802X Additional Books, Individuals, or Items Discuss in the show: N/A Contact the Host: rob@contenderswanted.com Survey: To access the listener survey, use the following links: Right to the form: https://forms.gle/7WwV1LzHGrTDuQtw5 If that doesn't work: www.ContendersWanted.com/Survey…
Show Notes: Can you think of an example of someone or something in a perceived disadvantage that then turns it into their advantage? My mind things of Ben Affleck's character in the movie, the Accountant. Or the engineers from Apollo 11 using just what was in a box to fix the spaceship. Or Edmond Dantes from the Count of Monte Cristo. Beyond the pop culture references, some might even say that their higher education left them at a bit of a disadvantage when they entered the work force. You may have quickly realized once you entered the workforce that you were faced with a whole new set of skills to develop. Things like networking, communication, leadership, negotiations, sales, management, and on and on and on. But there’s still value in higher education. So how do we make sure we get the most out of it and then turn these missing skills from a disadvantage into our advantage once we’re out in the workforce? Well our guest today attended elite level higher education, and it didn’t take long for him once he started his professional career to feel like he had missed some critically important skills in that education process. This then in turn led him on a path to find, develop, and master these missing skills and then later teach them to others so they can supercharge their professional careers. Our guest today is Mark Herschberg. From tracking criminals and terrorists on the dark web to creating marketplaces and new authentication systems, Mark has spent his career launching and developing new ventures at startups and Fortune 500s and in academia. He helped to start the Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program, dubbed MIT’s “career success accelerator,” where he teaches annually. At MIT, he received a B.S. in physics, a B.S. in electrical engineering & computer science, and a M.Eng. in electrical engineering & computer science, focusing on cryptography. At Harvard Business School, Mark helped create a platform used to teach finance at prominent business schools. He also works with many non-profits, including Techie Youth and Plant A Million Corals. He was one of the top-ranked ballroom dancers in the country and now lives in New York City, where he is known for his social gatherings, including his annual Halloween party, as well as his diverse cufflink collection. On the show today we discuss the following: Who is Mark and what does he do (5:07) Mark's perspective on the value of higher education (9:04) How did his formal education not prepare him for his career (13:20) How Mark developed these missing skills in himself (16:11) Specific things you can do now to develop these skills (18:51) Was Mark's higher education worth it? Show Notes: How much do you think about your thoughts? Seems kinda like a funny question, don’t you think? Thinking about our thoughts? But in all reality, this is something people have encouraged me to do ever since I was a kid. But my early training around paying attention to my thoughts really only focused on moral cleanliness. I didn’t think about learning to observe and actively choose my own thoughts in other areas until I got more involved in personal development. Well our guest today has done the work necessary to master his thoughts and told me after the show that he feels those lessons are the most important lessons he could share with us. Our guest today is Sir Steven Wilkinson. He is an Englishman living in Ireland and the Founder & Managing Director of Good & Prosper Ltd an education, consulting and investment company. In 2015 he was invited to join an interfaith delegation to the Caribbean island state of Grenada. As part of that delegation representing the Anglican community, he was awarded with an honor bestowed by the Governor General into the Order of the Nation of Grenada with the rank of Knight Commander. His family, consisting of his wife Britta and their four children. They live at the south end of the beautiful County Wicklow, where they spend a great deal of time trail walking in the mountains and fells of the Wicklow National Park. Show Notes: Growing up did you ever feel like if you don't go to college you're probably going to be a failure? Well if you did, you're not alone in that feeling. Show Notes: " To thy own self be true." Have you ever pondered on what this oft quoted saying from Shakesphere’s Hamlet means? Better yet, how have you come to better know yourself? For me I’ve done at least half a dozen different personality quizzes, strength finder tests, and purpose discovery worksheets. Each one has been helpful, but, for me personally, it’s been the culmination of all of these together coupled with journaling and frequent reflection that’s allowed me to better come to see myself, and as I have done this work I’ve come to believe that this process of coming to see ourselves more clearly is a vital part of our own individual journey through life. Our guest today has gone through the work to know herself and that work that has completely changed the course of her life. Our guest today is Liz Pessaran. Liz is a Licensed Therapist, Life Coach and Speaker who helps people around the world let go of what they “should” do and embrace what they feel “connected to”. Ultimately thriving in their purpose. She helps folks walk away from their unfilled jobs and lifestyles and step into their dreams and cultivate the life they always desired. With nearly a decade of counseling experience, Liz utilizes her unique skill set to guide women to tap into their deep soul so they can shatter the box of limited belief and embrace their inner magic. Show Notes: No matter your position, power, or wealth, I think we all agree that we wish we could somehow get more time. Show Notes: Have you ever lost a close loved one? Perhaps a parent, sibling, close grandparent, or friend. Was it painful? It likely was. And each of us has our own way of dealing with those inevitable pains of life. Some more healthy than others. But no matter how we deal with it, we have to deal with it. We can't just run and hide, we have to face the pain. On the show today I sit down with a woman who has not only had incredibly painful experiences in her own life loosing two children, but she shares how she had turned those experiences into a source of strength for her that she now uses to help and coach women going through the same things. Andi and her amazing husband of almost 15 years are parents to 4 great kids and 2 angel babies. Andi has always loved people. With her bachelors degree, she was able to work as a Recreational Therapist until the kids came along. She says she got her business training by accidentally (and eventually intentionally) building a network marketing business. She fell in love with coaching her team members and furthered her training by becoming a Certified Life Coach through The Life Coach School. Show Notes: If you could sit down with someone who's played professionally in two different sports, what would you want to ask them about success? Maybe it's how they did it. Maybe it's the biggest struggles they went through. Maybe it's the attributes they've seen in the most successful in their sports. Or maybe you ask about stuff that most people don't see. On the show today we talk about all these things and more with our guest and learn just what it takes to become pro at two different sports. Paul Lasike is a New Zealand-born, USA international rugby player who currently plays professional rugby for the Harlequins Rugby club in the English Premiership League. Prior to joining the Harlequins, Paul played rugby for Team-USA and the Utah Warriors. Paul was the centre of Team USA’s historic 30-29 victory over Scotland in 2018 – the country’s first major win over a Tier One nation. He represented USA at the Rugby World Cup in Japan starting all four pool stage matches. Prior to his professional rugby career, Paul played running back and full-back for the Arizona Cardinals and later the Chicago Bears. Paul attended Brigham Young University and played both rugby and then football once NFL scouts came knocking. Paul is a dedicated husband and father, one of 10 children in an ethnic Tongan family, and his talents stretch beyond the sports field as he is also a talented musician. Show Notes: I think it’s almost a universally understood fact of life that the old kids in a family are the guinea pigs and life tends to be very different when you compare the oldest and youngest children in a family. Part of that is that life circumstances change and part of that is that parents get better with time. Generally though, this is because parents tend to use an equity based parenting system and not an equality based system. But what is the difference between equity and equality and how can we use it to more effectively parent? On the show today we talk about this ethical principle and so many others that we can apply in parenting, business, and in life as we strive to make better decisions and have better long-term outcomes. Brad Agle is the George W. Romney Endowed Professor, and Professor of Ethics and Leadership in the Marriott School of Business at Brigham Young University (BYU). He is founder, chairman, and chief scientist at Merit Leadership and served as a Fellow and chair of the BYU Wheatley Institution Ethics Initiative from 2008 - 2020. Previous to his appointment at BYU in 2009, he spent 17 years as a professor of Strategy, Organizations, and Environment in the Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh, where he also served for eight years as the inaugural director of the David Berg Center for Ethics and Leadership. His teaching brought the University of Pittsburgh the distinction of being the #2 ranked executive MBA program in the world in business ethics by Business Week. Dr. Agle received a Ph.D. in Business Management from the University of Washington and a B.S. in Information Management from BYU. In 2014 he published the book “Research Companion to Behavioral Ethics in Organizations: Constructs and Measures.” In 2016 he published the book "The Business Ethics Field Guide." Brad and his wife Kristi are the parents of Erik, Lindsay, Christian, and Amanda. On the show today we discuss the following: Who is Prof. Agle and what does he do (4:18) The creation of the ethical field guide for the special forces (5:30) The 13 Ethical Dilemmas (19:53) The ethics of loyalty and it's application in Nazi Germany (22:22) How to apply these principles outside your professional life (31:30) Consequences for not following ethical principles (37:03) Equity versus equality in parenting (41:22) What does it mean to him to be a Contender (45:27) How to learn more about Professor Brad Agle: Prof. Agle's full BYU Bio Prof. Agle's Book: The Business Ethics Field Guide Additional Books, Individuals, or Items Discuss in the show: Moral Injury Dalow Concentration Camp Leading Saints The Man in the Arena Speech Merit Leadership Contact the Host: rob@contenderswanted.com Giveaway: If you'd like to learn what you need to do to be successful in your own life, we're giving away our free e-workbook called “How to Find Your Path to Your Success”. Show Notes: What comes to mind when you hear the word freeloader? What about mooch? Parasite? Slacker? Or deadbeat? No matter what came to mind, it likely wasn’t something nice. But at the end of the day we all know what it means: someone who takes advantage of the kindness and charity of others who shouldn’t. And almost universally we wouldn’t want to be described like that. But the problem is that none of us really is a “lone wolf”. We all need each other. So how do we appropriately accept and even at times elicit help from others without becoming that freeloader we all despise? Well our guests today were given a lesson, or better said six little lessons, in how to give and receive help when in less than four years they went from a young married couple with no kids to parents of six and they had to learn how to be willing to receive help in order to just keep things afloat and, later, the value of returning the favor. Dallin & Alyssa McEwen’s story began when they were 12 years old leading them to finally be in the same place at the same time in college. They’ve been married for 8 years. The first year spent playing college sports and the next two spent trying to grow their family. After a successful first round of IVF they had twin girls join the crew. 18 months later came what they believed to be the biggest surprise of their life when their little boy was born. But then a year and a half later, they got pregnant with triplets! If you’re still doing the math that’s 6 kids in 3 years. As they say, their life is busy and chaotic and filled with love, giggles and a lot of diapers. They wouldn’t change their circumstance for the world, but instead have jumped two feet in to making the day to day not just manageable but enjoyable. On the show today we discuss the following: Who are Dallin & Alyssa and what do they do (4:08) How they have 6 kids ages 4 and under (5:43) What is life like? (10:17) How structure helps Dallin & Alyssa thrive (12:51) Learning how to allow others to serve them (14:35) Dallin & Alyssa's annual ritual that keeps their lines of communication open (20:57) How they make time for each other every day (25:53) How Dallin uses the financial pressure of life with 6 small kids to make him better professionally (29:33) How Alyssa became an Instagram Influencer (38:16) How Alyssa handles social media trolls (44:08) How Alyssa balances being authentic and protecting her children (46:36) What does it mean to them to be a Contender (51:52) How to learn more about Dallin & Alyssa: Dallin's LinkedIn Alyssa's Instagram (alyssa_mcewen) Additional Books, Individuals, or Items Discuss in the show: Marriage Communication Book: For All Eternity by John L.
