Singer-songwriter, Caroline Cobb, joins me on the podcast to discuss longing with hope: waiting for Christ’s return while enjoying the common graces on this side of eternity. Caroline loves to share the story of scripture through her music and hopes to make it accessible to people throughout their daily lives. During her time on the podcast, she encourages us to yearn for Christ’s return and set our hope in Him. Her love for the Lord and passion for His word is radiant.

A little bit about the guest:

Before her thirtieth birthday, singer-songwriter Caroline Cobb set a goal to write a song for every book of the Bible in one year. That year set in motion a passion to tell the stories of scripture through music, with creativity and faithfulness. Caroline’s forthcoming album, A Seed, A Sunrise, explores the longing hope of Advent, the joy of Christmas, and the anticipation of Christ’s return. Produced by Isaac Wardell (Josh Garells, Sandra McCracken) and featuring gospel trio Resound and a fourteen-piece string orchestra, the new album builds on Caroline’s previous work the Blood + the Breath (2013) and a Home & a Hunger (2017). Both trace a theme from creation to Christ’s return, with every song parachuting into a different biblical scene.

Caroline has been featured by The Gospel Coalition, Doxology & Theology, Risen Motherhood and many more, with a Home & a Hunger named among “The Best Albums of the 2010s” by The Gospel Coalition. She and her husband live in Dallas, TX with their three children Ellie, Harrison and Libby.

A Seed, A Sunrise: Advent to Christmas Songs

Caroline Cobb

Behold the Lamb of God by Andrew Peterson

Book of Common Prayer Lectionary

Caroline is reading Gentle and Lowly by Dane C. Ortlund and the Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson; she’s watching Elf, the Crown and The Mandalorian; and she’s listening to Andrew Peterson, Sandra McCracken, and NeedtoBreathe. She is being refreshed by spending time in nature, women’s Bible study, and breaks from social media.

Noteworthy quotes:

“When you know the end of the story, all of the messy middle makes a lot more sense and there’s a lot more hope when things are hard. “ 5:36

“We’re so quick to rush to the warm fuzziness of Christmas, but I think that God has called us, also, to long for Him to return.” 6:32

“What we really need is not a vaccine or certain president; what we really need is Christ.” 21:22

Questions for consideration:

  • In what ways do you find yourself getting caught up in the culture of Christmas rather than the true meaning of Christmas? How can you orient Christmas festivities around longing for Christ’s return?
