Jesus confronts the Pharisees at the core of their theology, which is tradition. Their question about who Jesus is should have been a statement that he is God and though Messiah they were waiting for was before them. When we don't pay attention to scripture and walk in its love and morality, self-righteousness is the fruit of religion. The Pharisees and scribes may have started off Noble because Israel had become a prostate, but eventually they became self-contained and selfish and lost their way even though they had the word of God in front of them. They became the masters of the apostasy and not the savior. So when the saver showed up they could not receive him because it did not look like what they imagined and did not fit within their imagination. So many times in our churches we do the same thing.
