Paul de Savary has a mission to transform social care. He is not a politician. Nor is he a social worker. Nor did he ever envisage himself being a pioneer for an issue which is constantly described as being in crisis.
Paul’s story is very personal and uplifting.
When his daughter, Laura, was six months old, doctors told the family, ‘Your daughter is mentally handicapped, she might live, or might not – we don’t really know and, by the way, good luck’. Over the years, fighting to get the best for Laura gave them all an insight into the world of caring for the most vulnerable and it was not an inspiring picture.
The phrase, ‘falling off a cliff’ refers to the point at which a child with special needs becomes an adult. Regardless of a person’s mental and physical needs, a raft of safety nets drops away.
The de Savary family searched and searched and found there was no-where Laura could live a safe, secure and fulfilling life.
Paul his wife Ann and Laura’s brother Hugo created their own care environment, Home From Home, in Lincolnshire, which constantly wins high ratings from the care regulator.
They use unique technology and new thinking, ignored by many mainstream professionals, to help the most vulnerable in our society live their lives to the fullest.
“Laura is testament to how anyone can positively affect the lives of others,” says Paul.
