Alejo Garza Tamez, a 77-year-old rancher in Tamaulipas, Mexico, became a symbol of defiance when he single-handedly fought off a cartel attempting to seize his land in November 2010. After being given a 24-hour ultimatum to vacate his property, Garza Tamez prepared his home for a final stand, strategically positioning firearms throughout his ranch. When the cartel returned, he engaged them in a fierce gunfight, killing four members and wounding two others before being fatally wounded himself. His courageous resistance against overwhelming odds has since become legendary in Mexico, representing a rare act of defiance against the pervasive cartel violence in the region.
In the second segment..
Moisés Sánchez, a brave citizen journalist from Veracruz, Mexico, was abducted and brutally murdered in January 2015 after exposing corruption and cartel violence in his community through his independent newspaper, La Unión. His abduction, carried out by armed men reportedly linked to local law enforcement, shocked the nation. Investigations revealed that Medellín de Bravo’s mayor, Omar Cruz Reyes, was behind the crime, targeting Sánchez for his critical reporting on local corruption. Despite an arrest warrant, Cruz remains at large, while the case, like many involving journalists in Mexico, has been marred by delays, corruption, and impunity. Sánchez’s death is a chilling reminder of the deadly risks faced by journalists in Mexico, where violence and corruption often silence those who seek the truth.
