North Carolinians display understandable outrage at GOP candidate’s voter purge scheme
Manage episode 454940768 series 16409
Judge Griffin failed to pick up enough votes in the partial, statewide hand recount he requested for the State Board of Elections to order a full hand recount. (File photo)
“A bunch of bull.” That’s how one of the numerous North Carolinians targeted by Republican Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin to have her ballot not count in the November election eloquently reacted last week.
Griffin is trying to have the votes of 60,000 North Carolinians, in effect, retroactively uncounted because their original voter registration record – many of which were created decades ago – didn’t include a Social Security or driver’s license identity number.
All of the voters in question still had to comply with our state’s photo ID law when they voted this year.
The idea of purging these voters failed in federal court prior to the election, but now – having lost the race for a Supreme Court seat to incumbent Allison Riggs by a close margin, Griffin is trying the scheme again in hopes of getting his pals on the court to overturn the election.
The bottom line: The legal flaws in Griffin’s scheme are large and numerous, but the outraged Wake County voter summed it up best – as quote “a bunch of bull.”
