We're back! And we're back with a three part series that features my good friend and collaborator Jordan Ferretti of Team Builder Dojo . A bit of a different one today. I wanted to explroe something that’s been on my mind, but not be glued to my desk (with my fancy microphone). So if you’re listening to this one, you’re on a walk with me. One of the things I pretty much always invite guys to do is to feel what’s happening in their bodies. The sensations that are happening in our bodies are pretty much always telling us something . How much access do we have to them? We’re not talking about emotions just yet—just the sensations in the body (e.g. tightness in my stomach, warmth on my face). What do you notice when you listen to this one? What happens for you when you hear the invitation to feel? I’d love to learn what’s happening for you. This one is far and reaching and was a lot of fun. Quick CW: brief mention of suicide ideation. Mike Joseph is the host and producer of the podcast Detoxicity, which aims to rewrite the code for what’s considered masculine in society. I was lucky enough to be featured on a recent episode (see the below link). Mike is also a mental health advocate, working alongside a variety of non profit organizations that intertwine mental wellness and music. Over the last three decades, he’s maintained a career in the music industry while also working as a journalist and radio personality. Mike was born in and is currently based in Brooklyn, NY. Our conversation moves between his experience of stepping into his own healing work to realizing he was polyamorous. We talk mental health, race, and getting outdoors. Like I said, far and reaching. CW: Themes of sexual violence and abuse. This is a different kind of episode from what I've done in the past. While I typically talk about male conditioning and issues around masculinity, this one is quite specific: talking about male survivors of sexual violence. Not perpetrators (though, as mentioned, there's often confusion around that), but survivors . My guest is my friend Jim Struve, the Executive Director of Men Healing , a non-profit dedicated to supporting men and male-identified folks who have survived sexual violence as children or as adults. Surprisingly, the data shows that about 1 in 6 men are such survivors. That's no small number. You'll hear about how Jim and his team (many of them survivors themselves) work with these men, helping them reclaim their lives and passions. We talk about why, although it's been useful, perhaps it's time to move on from the terminology of PTSD. We talk about the idea of "invisible deprivation," and how building community can help men heal. If you or someone you know are a survivor and are looking for support: contact Men Healing . I’ve mentioned in the past that my friend Christian invited me to join him at the his inaugural event–an event that will be held quarterly on the Equinox or Solstice–to share my work and weave in some of his poetry. We had a great conversation. _And _I have to say, I was blown away that it was an audience of basically just men. It was really wonderful.
