In today's segment, Susan Delmonico of SJD Health and Fitness, joins to discuss sugar in our diet. Sugar is linked with so many health issues beyond obesity. From disease to diabetes, acne to inflammation, sugar should be limited as much as possible. To give you an idea, one 16 oz. can of regular soda has more sugar in it than the current recommended guidelines for a healthy diet. Susan also reminds us how food manufacturers will hide the term "sugar" by using other names for it. Some of the common names to look for include: dextrose, high fructose corn syrup, fructose, glucose, lactose and sucrose. Basically if the word ends in "ose," you are ingesting sugar.

Susan acknowledges we cannot completely eliminate sugar and we should not deny ourselves the occasional treat at birthday or other celebrations. However, what sneaks up on all of us are the unknown amounts in so many other products. Many items labeled as "fat free" will have to use sugar in some fashion to help make up the taste. It's ironic that foods labeled in a way to make you think they are healthy, may actually be worse for you in the long run. Learning how to read labels is key in making better choices at the grocery store.

It may seem cliche, but water is still the best drink for you on a daily basis. It helps keep you hydrated, helps to flush your system of unhealthy items and can often curb your hunger pangs. In fact, many times we mistake thirst for hunger. When you feel compelled to grab a snack, it could be your body actually telling you that you need more water.

As the interview winds down, Susan reminds everyone you can find her at website, or by finding her on social media on both Twitter and Facebook.
