The Gospel of Mark: Christianity vs Religion - Brian Barr

What is the difference between Christianity and religion? And how do we know if we are engaging in Christian practices or religious practices? This week, Brian Barr continued our sermon series through the book of Mark by contrasting Jesus’ Gospel teachings with the Pharisees’ religious beliefs. Religion is a man-made system of rules designed to earn the approval and acceptance of God. The danger of being caught up in a religious system is that our hearts become hard and we miss the person and work of Jesus! We miss the beauty of God's grace which truly liberates us from our brokenness and sin! Christianity only works when we expose our brokenness and submit it to Jesus, rather than trying to prove our own worth to God. We want to be people who wholly submit ourselves to Jesus and reject all religiosity in our hearts.
