Music Industry Insights Worldwide Vol 2
Episode 6 Grace Howat
Grace Howat's journey as an international female transgender live-touring sound engineer is a testament to her resilience, talent, and commitment to breaking barriers in the music industry. Grace has been an integral part of the live music scene since 1997, working with a diverse range of renowned artists and bands such as Paolo Nutini, Franz Ferdinand, Bryan Ferry, Morrissey, Motorhead, Spiritualized, Kings of Leon, Beth Orton, and many others.
In 2020, during the first lockdown of the pandemic, Grace made the courageous decision to come out as a transgender woman. Despite her extensive professional network and experience being established before her transition, Grace has resumed her touring work as a visibly trans woman in the Touring Crew sector. The positive reception she has experienced in this typically male-dominated field is a testament to the evolving acceptance and inclusivity within the live music sector.
It is noteworthy that Grace remains one of the few visibly trans women in her field. While recognizing the broader underrepresentation of women, LGBTQ+ individuals, diverse ethnicities, and people with disabilities in the live music sector, Grace remains hopeful. The positive shift in the conversation and increasing numbers engaging with diversity and inclusion initiatives signifies progress. Grace is determined to continue her work in the sector, not only pursuing her passion for live sound engineering but also as a visible presence, hoping to inspire and encourage others to break into the industry.
Grace Howat's story is a powerful narrative of authenticity, perseverance, and the ongoing journey toward greater diversity and representation within the music industry, showcasing the importance of visibility and the positive impact it can have on paving the way for others.
