Together, we're redefining what it means, looks and feels like, to be doing "woman's work" in the world today. With confidence and the occasional rant. From boardrooms to studios, kitchens to coding dens, we explore the multifaceted experiences of today's woman, confirming that the new definition of "woman's work" is whatever feels authentic, true, and right for you. We're shedding expectations, setting aside the "shoulds", giving our finger to the "supposed tos". We're torching the old playbook and writing our own rules. Who runs the world? You decide. We're covering Iron Maiden's 14th studio album, A Matter Of Life And Death, released in late August and early September of 2006. The album has a loose theme around war and religion and also being a real slog to get through! AMoLaD received generally good reviews and was named best metal album of the year by multiple magazines. Rolling Stone gave it 3 out of 5 stars, saying the band was aging gracefully but adding they now march where they once galloped. Do our intrepid hosts agree? Ed and Stu continue their coverage of Iron Maiden's thriteenth studio album, Dance of Death. This half of the album features the band's first fully acoustic track, "Journeyman," and the first song co-written by drummer Nicko McBrain, "New Frontier," which is, of course, about the dangers of human cloning. Everyone was talking about human cloning in 2003! This side of the album also features another classic war-based epic, "Paschendale." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you are enjoying the show, join us on the Maiden Voyage Patreon to support what we're doing! This week we discuss Iron Maiden's thirteenth studio album, Dance of Death, which was released in 2003. We talk at length about the album art, which may be one of the worst album covers of all time, and provide a history lesson about the Cathars in connection with "Montsegur," one of the band's greatest late-era songs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are enjoying the show, join us on the Maiden Voyage Patreon to support what we're doing! The Blaze era has come to an end and Bruce Dickinson rejoins the band with the release of Iron Maiden's twelfth studio album, Brave New World. After a no longer applicable welcome to the new season (remember what we said in the Season 2 Intro about ignoring references to the Blaze albums being behind a paywall?), Stu and Ed enjoy the band's return to form! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are enjoying the show, join us on the Maiden Voyage Patreon to support what we're doing! BONUS ALERT! THIS IS GETTING TO BE A HABIT! We've reached the end of our bloviating Blaze-based bonus content. After focusing our first two Blaze bonus eps on songs by Wolfsbane, the final in our series moves to listening to a few of his most recent releases. Ed listens to a single released in September 2024, "Ghost in The Bottle," and the title track from Blaze's most recent studio album, "Circle of Stone." But wait there's more! As a bonus to the bonus, Ed sneaks in some belated holiday cheer when he realizes Blaze released a Christmas song in 2016, "Crazy Christmas." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are enjoying the show, join us on the Maiden Voyage Patreon to support what we're doing! We've reached the end of Blaze Bayley's time as singer of Iron Maiden, as the show covers the second side of Virtual XI. Ed and Stu talk about Bruce Dickinson's solo work overshadowing Iron Maiden's output, but still not selling as strongly as the band's mediocre work with Blaze. The guys also discuss how Virtual XI may be the most Steve Harris dominated album Iron Maiden has ever released. Half the songs are by Harris alone and he contributed heavily to three songs by Dave Murray. The album was also recorded in Harris' barnyard home-studio and Harris mixed the album and co-produced it. So we know who to blame! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you are enjoying the show, join us on the Maiden Voyage Patreon to support what we're doing! BONUS ALERT! AGAIN! We're back with the second in a series of Blaze-based bonus content. Here, Ed listens to two tracks off Wolfsbane's second studio album, Down Fall The Good Guys , released in 1991. The two singles from the album, "Ezy" and "After Midnight," sound better (production-wise) than the songs from the first album, but did the songs wind up too polished? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are enjoying the show, join us on the Maiden Voyage Patreon to support what we're doing! Ed and Stu dive headfirst into the second, and final, album of the Blaze Bayley era, Virtual XI. They discuss how Iron Maiden's 11th studio album feels like the ebb of this whole podcast process! Released in March 1998, the album was apparently titled Virtual XI to tie-in to both Iron Maiden's computer game, "Ed Hunter," and, naturally, the fact that the FIFA World Cup was happening that year. We're only two episodes in to the second season and Ed and Stu are already not enjoying themselves. They discuss how this album took the longest to produce of any Iron Maiden album to date, with 18 months of writing, rehearsing, recording and mixing. Blaze reportedly did not enjoy the lengthy process, which aptly describes how Ed and Stu feel about listening to this album! It's official! We're back or the start of Season 2 of Maiden Voyage, where Ed and Stu cover the first side of Iron Maiden's 10th studio album, The X-Factor! Released in October 1995, this marks the first album with the band's third singer, Blaze Bayley. Ed and Stu jump right into the thick of it, discussing the wonderfully absurd lyrics of the album's opening track, "Man on the Edge" about the Joel Schumacher movie, Falling Down. How will Blaze fit in with the band? Will singing bland, overly-long songs prove detrimental to Blaze's chances to succeed as Maiden's new singer? Will Ed ever stop pronouncing a hard "J" when saying Janick Gers' name? All this and more on this episode of Maiden Voyage. Well, dearest listeners, we've come to the end of our first season and Stu and Ed go out with a bang in this too long epic episode covering Side B of Fear of the Dark. It's the end of an era for Iron Maiden as Bruce Dickinson departs the band for the next 8 years and 2 studio albums, but while this album side is, at best, not great, it closes on a high note with the iconic titular song. The episode ends with a shocking reconfiguration of the absolutely definitive album rankings to date, as Stu and Ed realize they've made a grievous mistake. Where will things wind up? Ho, ho, ho! What could be better than a new episode of Maiden Voyage for Christmas?!? What's that? You had a whole list of things you asked for and a new Maiden Voyage episode wasn't one of them? Well, consider this a fun, unexpected stocking stuffer! Ed and Stu are talking Side A of Fear of the Dark, which starts off with the ripping single "Be Quick or Be Dead" and . . . . continues from there. The guys discuss everything from the many, um, "controversies" of the Maxwell family, to the numerous underwhelming B-Sides off the album's singles, to the surprising discovery of Bruce at the bottom of one of Ed's many adventures down a research rabbit hole. There is only one more episode to go in Maiden Voyage's first season. To hear the episodes covering the two Blaze Bayley albums as they are released, sign up for our patreon!
