Some people have thunder-story, lightning-strike moments... Nat is a lightning storm. 🌩️ At age 19 they were topping 50+ year-old men in BDSM scenes. Today they’re advocating for their unhoused neighbors in Tucson. It’s safe to say power is a recurring theme in Nat’s life. Our conversation ranges topics like sex work and social justice and lands with Nat performing an original poem called “Broke in Labor.” This episode is for anyone interested in better understanding POWER. A while back, I did a tarot reading where I felt a profound shift in relationship to a very potent symbol: Death. ☠️ 🎶 Dun, dun, dun! 🎻 Most of my life, I’ve encountered the concept of Death as something unwelcome. But in this reading, somehow, Death became a friend. Death showed up to encounter all the ways that I thought things had to be done. (Maybe even to encounter the idea that I had to do them?) For the first time, I experienced Death as a question: what needs to die so that we can truly live? What does a psychologist look like? What is their gender, gender identity, age range, race, ethnicity? Do they have tattoos or body modifications? What about their hair? How do they dress? The image is Dr. Diem Mooney in his normal work attire. And the text above was part of his post that went viral on LinkedIn back in 2020. I’ve been following him ever since. Diem has overcome homelessness, discrimination, domestic violence, and disability. He was nonverbal until the age of 5. He dropped out of college 3 times before he understood his strengths and limitations and formulated a strategy to succeed. He was 22 when he went back for college try #4, but this time, after advocating for his needs and accommodations, he earned 5 degrees in less than 6 years. By age 26, he was Dr. Diem! Nowadays, he’s running a successful consulting practice, supporting his wife’s professional ambitions, raising a family, and formulating a strategy to grow into his optimized version 3.0: “Boring Diem, Sr.” Want to learn from Diem’s brilliant strategic mind? Listen for the 5 questions that brought his #drdiem dreams into reality, and see if they can oxygenate yours.
