Today we’re diving into another list of things you can do. Today I’m bringing you 10 things you can do when dealing with a loss. We will be looking into that today and helping you close the 18 inch gap with these 10 statements will be bringing to you.

Losses come in many ways. I personally dealt with two major ones in 2023. In March I dealt with an unexpected resignation from a career of 27 years. Then at the end of 2023, December, I had the loss of my biological mother. What I’m bringing you today was given to me the day I had a consultation for mother’s funeral service.

It’s actually called The Mourner’s Bill of Rights. If you live in the United States you recall anything is a bill of rights pertains to the first 10 amendments of our own Constitution.

Hence the mourner’s Bill of Rights is 10 points as well. Now I was not not familiar with this person but to give credit where credit is due these were put together by Alan Wolfelt, PhD. I did a quick Google search on him and this is what I found:

He is a speaker, a grief counsellor, the director of the Center for Loss and Life Transition, and the author of several books. He lives in Fort Collins, Colorado.

So here is the mourner’s Bill of Rights, or in my own words 10 things you can do when dealing with a loss of some kind:

1. You have the right to experience your own grief

2. You have the right to talk about your grief

3. You have the right to feel a multitude of emotions

4. You have the right to be tolerant of your physical and emotional limits

5. You have the right to experience grief “attacks”

6. You have the right to make use of ritual

7. You have the right to embrace your spirituality

8. You have the right to search for meaning

9. You have the right to treasure your memories

10. You have the right to move toward your grief and heal

Bonus: The cycle of grief is quite often quoted in times of a loss. However, many people get stuck on the fact that it's linear process. We explore these in the podcast as well and the different variants that come up. Give yourself permission to go through these in any order.

Are you going through a loss of some sort. Do you know someone that is? I can help you (or that someone you know) look to a brighter future. As a coach, I can walk along side as you explore what is next. As someone from the outside with knowledge of what your situation may look like, I can be wide open to help you see the endless opportunities you have through coaching. Whether you need it now or later. And one last thing… you are never alone. I’m here if you need help.
