The historic memo by the Department of Health and Human Services recommending that cannabis be rescheduled as a schedule III substance has the nation on the edge of their seat waiting to hear how this is received. The DEA has ultimate authority on how controlled substances are scheduled but made no formal statement at the time the memo was leaked. Pro cannabis Representative Blumenauer and others followed up with a letter that detailed why cannabis should be descheduled but again, no formal response was given-until recently that is. In a statement released this week, the DEA are now conducting a review of the controlled substance based on available scientific data. The debate over cannabis scheduling has been ongoing for years, with advocates arguing that it should be reclassified due to its potential medical benefits and low risk of abuse compared to other drugs in the same category. On the other hand, opponents argue that any psychoactive substance should remain heavily regulated. Many colleges are now offering degrees in cannabis and funding large medical studies, which could potentially lead to new evidence supporting its rescheduling. In addition, individual states continue the legalization efforts while legalized states bring in millions in additional tax dollars.
