Much is made about the creative decisions in ads for the Big Game, but how does all that money, those requisite celebrity cameos, and everything else that goes into these multi-million dollar investments translate into Return on investment? Today we’re going to talk about what the numbers tell us from all those high-profile ads and who the winners and losers of the Advertising Bowl are in 2025. To help me discuss this topic, I’d like to welcome Nataly Kelly, CMO at Zappi, who unveiled their annual Super Bowl Ad Success report on Monday. We’re here to talk about the approach, the results, and what those results mean for brands that invested a lot of money - and time - into their campaigns. About Nataly Kelly I help companies unlock global growth For more than two decades, I have helped scale businesses across borders, as an executive at B2B SaaS and MarTech companies. I’m Chief Marketing Officer at Zappi, a consumer research platform. I spent nearly 8 years as a Vice President at HubSpot, a multi-billion-dollar public tech company, driving growth on the international side of the business. Having served as an executive at various tech companies, I’ve led teams spanning many functions, including Marketing, Sales, Product, and International Ops. I’m an award-winning marketing leader, a former Fulbright scholar, and an ongoing contributor to Harvard Business Review. I love working with interesting people and removing barriers to access. Catriona Jamieson, M.D., Ph.D., discusses pioneering research on cancer and aging in space environments, highlighting how microgravity accelerates cancer cell growth and leads to stem cell exhaustion, genomic instability, and “dark genome” activation. Using innovative tools like nano-bioreactors and artificial intelligence, her team simulates these effects and tracks cellular changes, uncovering how space’s unique conditions drive mutations and alter cellular behavior. They find that stem cells rapidly proliferate but then become exhausted in space, a process tied to telomere shortening and mitochondrial stress, impacting cell longevity and regenerative potential. Through collaborations with NASA and industry partners, Jamieson’s research aims to develop therapies to counter these effects, offering potential insights for cancer treatment and stem cell health on Earth. Computer technology is evolving at a rapid pace, but have you ever wondered how computer scientists are able to make the devices we use on a every day basis so fast? How do machine learning computers and artificial intelligence work at such a high capacity? The work of theoretical computer scientists, that use math instead of programming to provide a rigorous framework for understanding what computation is, how it can be performed, and what its limitations are. In a first for Science Like Me, two guests... postdoctoral research scientist Yinzhan Xu and Ph.D. student Chris Ye discuss their theoretical computer science work with EnCORE, the Institute for Emerging CORE Methods in Data Science and how by applying math to find different ways of solving problems and making computations more efficient. San Diego artist and graphic designer Ron Miriello's new art installation "Found Adrift" is inspired by a scrapbook of seaweed. The exquisite collection was gathered by an unknown young woman from Searsport, Maine, in 1876. Tucked away in a trunk for almost 150 years, it was rediscovered by Richard Rydell, a local collector and lifelong friend of Miriello's. The intricate beauty captured in the original specimens inspired the artist during a visit to Maine in 2023 and became the subject for his extensive new collection of works on canvas, textiles and lithographs - all in service to the stunning, hidden beauty of nature itself. The human body is made up of billions of cells. These cells are the basic building blocks of life, and they work together to form tissues, organs, and systems that enable our body to function and carry out various activities. Each cell has its own specific function and role in maintaining the overall health and functionality of the body, but how do these cells know what to do? Researchers at UC San Diego and Hebrew University of Jerusalem share an intercontinental effort working to determine just that. Alon Goren and Itamar Simon discuss some of the work they are doing to learn more about the human body beyond the cellular level. [Health and Medicine] [Science] [Show ID: 40516]…

In the early 20th century, Budapest was the second-largest Jewish city in Europe, and Jewish artists and intellectuals played a major role in the city’s cosmopolitan cultural life. Among them was theater and cinema director and producer Béla Pásztor, whose career was marked by early success and later oppression. In a conversation with UC San Diego history professor Deborah Hertz, Béla’s son, Rafael Pastor, explores his family’s history before, during, and after the Nazi occupation of Hungary, including his parents’ emigration to Israel, where he was born. In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the deportations and annihilations of Hungarian Jews in 1944, which Béla survived in hiding, the conversation is preceded by a brief historical overview and survivor testimonies of this harrowing—and unforgettable—tragedy. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) an estimated 1.3 billion people or 16% of the global population have a significant disability. A disability is a condition that can be mental or physical, and can affect a person's vision, movement, thinking, learning, communication, hearing, mental health or social relationships. However, not all disabilities are the same. Some disabilities are genetic, passed down from generation to generation, while others may have been caused by an incident out of the person's control. In this episode of Exploring Ethics, Professor Joseph Stramondo will discuss the narrative, identity and ethics of choosing disability. The current conflict between Israel and Gaza stems from long-standing tensions but was exacerbated after a major attack by armed groups from Gaza on October 7, 2023, resulting in over 1,200 Israeli deaths and 250 hostages being taken. This prompted a large-scale military response by Israel, including airstrikes and ground operations in Gaza, which have killed over 41,000 Palestinians, with tens of thousands more injured and displaced. The escalation in violence has also created a humanitarian crisis. The biggest question... will these hostilities ever come to an end? Is there hope for a two-state plan between Israel and Gaza? Using data driven analytics, Israeli policy expert Dahlia Scheindlin and Palestinian public opinion and polling expert Khalil Shikaki reveal the thoughts and mindsets of these two fighting populations and if peace is possible in the Middle East.
