Episode 99: Speakers at the 50th Anniversary Gathering of the Notre Dame 10
Manage episode 428106896 series 2569006
On November 18, 1969, during the height of the Vietnam War, a group of Notre Dame students protested the presence of Central Intelligence Agency and DAO (Defense Attache Office, Saigon) on campus. At the time, Fr. Emmanuel Charles McCarthy was a professor in the literature department; he had also founded and was the Director of The Program for the Study and Practice of Nonviolent Conflict Resolution. Ten of the students got expelled. Fr. McCarthy ended up resigning, to show solidarity with the students.
On the 50th anniversary in 2019, Fr. McCarthy and four of the former students reunited to tell the story of what happened that day, why it happened, and how it has affected their lives, as well as the ripple effects it has sent through the institution of the University of Notre Dame. Episode 98 features their discussion, and Episode 99 features the speeches that were given that day.
The gatherings that have been happening at Notre Dame every 10 years on the anniversary of the protests resulted in the first ever memorial to Conscientious Objectors on a Catholic campus in the United States being erected on the Notre Dame campus, across from the famous grotto.
