S3E38: Psychology & Lives of Mass Shooters - 35 Mass Shooting Prevention & Intervention Strategies
Manage episode 387967885 series 2970749
What is it like to meet murderers on death row? What is it like to meet mass shooters (those who survived)? Their families and friends? What is it like to meet the families and friends of their victims?
In this episode, Dr. Jillian Peterson takes us through the lives of mass shooters and tells us about some of the variables in their psychological journey from being a wee baby to becoming a mass murderer. She also shares warning signs - what mass shooters leak before they begin their killing rampage.
And, of course, we talk about guns and mass shootings. Are the two connected? Well, let me say this - England and New Zealand banned many types of guns and mass shootings decreased dramatically!
One of the factors that I found fascinating about mass shooters is their desire for fame or perhaps infamy. So that I won't spoil too much here, listen to Dr. Peterson talk about this factor and also be sure to visit the No Notoriety website, which was founded by the parents of a mass shooting victim.
Dr. Peterson is a professor of criminology and criminal justice at Hamline University, where she is the Executive Director of the Violence Prevention Project Research Center. She is the co-author of Violence Project – How to Stop the Mass Shooting Epidemic, a book that we discuss in this episode.
To learn more about Dr. Peterson, you can visit her academic and personal home pages.
America's Gun Violence - Resurrecting & Reinterpreting the 2nd Amendment: in this episode, Dr. Robert Spitzer tells the history of gun regulation in America, and how the NRA transformed itself from helping Congress regulate guns to opposing all gun regulations.
I hope you enjoy this episode.
