River Donaghey grew up in a cult. Or at least that’s what some people called it. His parents called it a “personal-growth seminar group.” Its leader called it “one big happy family.” But there was a dark side to the world River grew up in. One he never heard about as a kid. In the 1970s and 80s, a self-help company called Lifespring took America by storm. Hogan's Alley was a thriving Black community in Vancouver that was created in the Strathcona area after Black folks were unable to secure housing elsewhere due to racism. This community was small, but extremely successful and vital to supporting the growth of Black women and their entrepreneurial endeavors. Vie Moore and Nora Hendrix -the grandmother of Jimi Hendrix- were vital and well loved members of the community who did what they could to ensure that everyone felt welcomed. Hogan's Alley did not get the supports they deserved and it was made clear from the very beginning that their presence was not wanted, due to overt and covert forms of racism. Like many Black communities across so called Canada, Hogan's Alley was destroyed in the name of urban renewal despite backlash from community members themselves. In this video we discuss all things Hogan's Alley.
