GoTigers247's Behind Enemy Lines Ep 5; Ryan Wallen w/ OwlsDaily.com
Manage episode 342484627 series 2579460
Welcome to GoTigers247's Behind Enemy Lines Episode 5. In this episode we are joined by Ryan Wallen of OwlsDaily.com, the 247Sports affiliate for Temple University.
In the first segment, Kenny and Ryan discuss the history behind the Temple/Memphis matchup. Both teams have played each other 7 times and Temple currently leads the series 4-3. Ryan discusses how the game between the Tigers and Owls is always a dogfight, and no matter each team's win/loss record, both team's fan base can expect a hard fought game. Ryan talks about the coaching change that Temple has experienced this year with the hiring of Stan Drayton as the head coach. He describes Drayton as a coach that wants to reignite the ground and pound mentality in the Temple Owls. He believes that over the past few years, the Temple football team has had moments where they have given up at the end of a game, and how that is so against the culture of Philadelphia and Temple University. The Temple team comes into this matchup with a 2-2 record, but Ryan believes that if a few things had gone the Owls way, they could easily be at 3-1 on the season.
Ryan discusses the emergence of EJ Warner as the starting quarterback for Temple. He has replaced former Temple quarterback, D'Wan Mathis, and has shown flashes of the strong pedigree he comes from as the son of former NFL MVP Kurt Warner. EJ has taken major steps to show he is ready to play even as a true freshman, but has moments where fans see his youth show itself.
In the second segment, Kenny and Ryan discuss certain matchups they are looking out for in this game. Ryan is concerned with how Temple's secondary is going to adjust to playing a quarterback with the accuracy that Seth Henigan has. Temple has not faced a quarterback of Seth's caliber all year, and the Temple secondary has consistently been burned by lesser quarterbacks. Temple's strongest unit on their team is their defensive line and linebacker corp. They are third in the country in sacks (15) and boast a defensive line that aspires to have multiple players playing on Sunday in a few years. The Tigers' offensive line has struggled to protect Seth Henigan and open up holes for the running game, and with two starting lineman "day to day" with injuries, the Tigers will have to play above their heads to keep Temple's defense out of the backfield.
Ryan believes that the Tigers have the offensive firepower to run away from Temple in this game, but he would also not be surprised if Temple kept the game close.
