When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. Executive Producers include Katrina Onstad, Stuart Coxe, and Bernie Blum. Senior Producer is Debbie Pacheco. Associate Producers are Hailey Choi and Emily Morantz. Research and translation by Isabella Kempf. Sound design and audio mix by Philip Wilson, with help from Cameron McIver. Theme music by Oliver Wickham. Voice acting by Natalia Bushnik. We end 2023 with a topic very dear to Cj’s heart: Love Teams! Especially when 2023 is the year when KathNiel, one the most iconic Pinoy love teams, has broken up. Love Teams, we could claim, is a uniquely Filipino phenomenon with a rich history and evolution, which remains a significant and relevant fixture in our pop culture. Inspired by the classic framework of romance: you and me against the world, we put the concept of love teams against, well, the world. Love Teams & Capitalism Love Teams & Fandoms Love Teams & True Love Love Teams & Cinephiles It’s quite a long episode, but it sure is chaotic as it is vibrant. Cj talks with her good friend Richard Bolisay, film critic, professor, and writer of the books Break It To Me Gently and Nothing Deep, about their favorite British limited series FLEABAG. They talk about how FLEABAG and Phoebe Waller-Bridge capture the Millennial psyche of messiness, self-aware humor, flirting, and so much more! Quite an insightful, fun, and juicy episode. Check out Richard Bolisay's second book, Nothing Deep. In his second collection of essays, Richard Bolisay speaks to personalities from Philippine cinema and shares their stories. He goes to a film shoot and observes the fortuitous meeting between its star and director. He pays tribute to a beloved filmmaker. He rhapsodizes about love teams and examines the movies of two of the biggest pairs of the era. He visits the house of an actor known for his ease and effortlessness. He writes an encompassing appraisal of the career of an influential screenwriter. Weaving together incisive critique and tender storytelling, Nothing Deep contains these instances and other dispatches from the alleyways of Filipino film in the 2010s and offers time capsules of its joys, sorrows, and transformations. SPOILER ALERT! We watched Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and loved it! In this episode, we asked pop culture writer and scholar Carljoe Javier to sit with us and discuss the finer points of the Marvel blockbuster film. Then, we address the two elephants in the Wakandan room: 1. Should pop culture be woke? 2. Why do most people find the idea of wokeness annoying? It’s quite the heated discussion, podpals. Join us as we discuss everything from social justice warriors to movies that not age well at all, and everything in between. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.…

So here’s the thing: Wincy has few to zero female friends. Cj has more male friends than female friends. What gives? Could it be the result of studying in exclusive Catholic schools? More importantly, what are platonic relationships anyway? In this episode, we ask ourselves: Can guys and girls be friends, without sexual attraction taking over? What are the benefits of having friends from the opposite sex (or gender spectrum)? When do platonic relationships cross boundaries? We go all-out ‘When Harry Met Sally’ in this episode, podpals. So here are two things that happened in our lives: Wincy got a bad review for his book; Cj got attacked when she wrote a rather scathing review for the movie ‘Ang Nawawala’. In this episode, we discuss the idea of the bad review. How should we take negative criticism? Do bad reviews teach us anything about ourselves? How do you give someone a bad review? Also, apologies, pod pals, for due to an error in our scheduling, this episode was supposed to come out before our appearance at the 2022 Manila International Book Fair. Admit it, we spend a good amount of our day on TikTok. It’s all fun and entertaining until we come across a video that triggers us! Then, we have the stitches and the stitch backs and everything is so messy! Bardagulan era! In this episode, Wincy and Cj discuss the three noisiest discussions on TikTok (Aug - Sept 2022): Quiet Quitting, and some Andrew Tate-wannabes going viral over judgments on Body Counts and Expensive Women.
