The HJR Experiment is back for this week’s episode with 3 MMA icons: Henry Cejudo, Quinton Rampage Jackson, and Frank Mir!
This episode gets started with Henry describing his mindset going into his upcoming fight with Merab Dvalishvili on February 17th. The guys start joking about what it would take for them to accept a bare knuckle boxing fight and give a shoutout to Mike Perry for his recent success in the sport. Frank moves on to ask Henry about his experiences entering the olympics at only 18 years old and winning a gold medal in wrestling.
Henry gets real about his hardships growing up in a poor family with 7 siblings and his father in and out of jail. He goes on to describe the ways that wrestling saved him and shaped him as a competitor. Henry and Frank talk about their wishes for their kids growing up and the importance of sports for developing mental toughness.
The discussion then shifts to Sean O’Malley’s recent KO win over Aljamain Sterling to capture the bantamweight championship. Henry is unsatisfied with the stoppage and says he wishes referees would be less eager to stop title fights. They analyze where Aljamain went wrong and Henry exposes a few weaknesses he sees in O’Malley’s style.
Next, Henry and Frank get technical talking about anticipation in grappling and always thinking one step ahead of your opponent. Henry talks about working with Islam Makachev and Jon Jones before their most recent fights and applying this same concept in their training.
The episode wraps up with Henry talking about himself being a better competitor than a fighter and doing whatever it takes to win!
