In ancient times, early humans began to think about the gods as necessary to their quest to expand beyond their borders. The great beyond, i.e., their clan and tribal boundaries, entailed degrees of both danger and uncertainty. So they envisioned a power that could protect them on their quest to create societal space for their particular group. They killed, raped, and burned with the understanding that this is what a supernatural power desired. If you were not a part of such an expanding group, you would likely be in serious trouble. This type of movement is essential to understand. We attempt to understand better how religion and spirituality work in our current complex and complicated experience as black people on North American soil and beyond. It’s important to note, historically, everything in the black world is of religious significance. Food, clothing, land, community, and so on are considered a part of the religious experience. This experience is protected, guarded, and watched by a spiritual force comprised of the Supreme Creator, Sub-deities, and the Ancestral enclave. Although enslavement did not eradicate the black notion of community and the divine, it was challenged to adapt to new ways of viewing God, self, and others. This spiritual adaptation of blending African traditional religion with Christianity and Islam produced a more spaced-out community. However, low levels of collective energy and vibration are perceived as significant progression and acceptable considering the degree of agitation inflicted upon black people for several hundred years. In this episode, I wish to discuss how high black vibrations can be expressed in black music and how the low pitch of spiritual volume indicates where we are as a people.
