Episode 2.7 - Growing up with a Parent with Mental Illness // with Ambeya and Chineye from 'Our Time'
Manage episode 239733846 series 2375822
Growing up with a parent with mental illness brings about many difficulties as a child. Chineye and Ambeya tell me how Our Time, a charity that helps young people whose parents have a mental illness by increasing their resilience, has helped them come across these barriers.
When a parent suffers from mental illness it is rare for anyone – parent, teacher, or even social worker – to know how to discuss the illness with the child. The children are often confused and frightened. Research has shown that in excess of 3.7 million young people (Children’s Commissioner, 2018) are affected by this issue. At present most receive no support. Our Time provides interventions for families and in schools to support these young people to ensure they get the right help early on and prevent them from becoming patients themselves.

*TRIGGER WARNING*This episode will discuss sensitive topics such as suicide and eating disorders. If you feel like you need to speak to someone, please call the Papyrus helpline on 080003684141.
