Part 1: In this episode I have the pleasure of speaking with Evan Schertz, owner of Maria’s bookstore talking about the upcoming 40th Anniversary celebration!

Today’s episode is the first of a two part series celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Maria’s Bookshop here in Durango. There will be an anniversary party on Saturday Sept 28th from 4-9pm at the store with beer from SKA Brewing, snacks, live music, dancing, family fun games and giveaways and everyone is welcome! This is a chance for them to show their customer appreciation for the many years of support. Joining me on the program today is Evan Schertz the current owner of Maria’s Bookshop which has been run by the family for over 20 years. As a locally owned independent bookstore, Maria’s provides up-to-date selections of fiction, non-fiction, young adult and children’s books as well as Southwest stories and especially local and regional authors. You can also sign up for the Maria’s book club which provides a monthly book selection and a group meeting. The store hosts regular authors’ talks and book signings which are just some of the many events you can expect to find happening there. They’ve developed many partnerships within the community over the years including with the local library and supplying the gift shop at the Powerhouse Science Center. When you walk into the store you’ll find many “staff picks” or recommendations of must read books picked for the community. Local artists also get an opportunity to hang their paintings and photographs on the walls in rotating exhibits which is another way for Maria’s to support the artistic community. In addition to being a valuable community resource Maria’s looks for meaningful ways to help schools, libraries and non-profits. See you at the party!
