In this episode, Brian Curtis, Ph.D. speaks with award-winning journalist Judi Ketteler. Judi has written for The New York Times, Scientific American, The Washington Post, TIME Magazine, among many other outlets. Relevant to our conversation today, Judi is the author of the wonderful book, Would I Lie to You? The Amazing Power of Being Honest in a World That Lies.

Brian and Judi discuss a wide range of topics, including how she became interested in honesty, why she decided to start examining her own honesty and dishonesty in daily life, which included having children and the election of Donald Trump, how we justify our dishonesty through cognitive dissonance and the actor observer bias, Judi’s experiences with the nuances of telling prosocial lies vs. giving truthful feedback, we discuss our personal experiences with a few of the 11 honesty principles that Judi lays out in her book, including the fundamental principle of awareness for examining our daily honesty choices, being mindful of how our emotions - particularly shame, fear, anger, and vulnerability - influence our daily decisions about honesty, Judi’s experiences dealing with positive and negative feedback from her honestly writing about having an emotional affair, how to be truthful without being a jerk, why opening the lens of honesty can result in living a deeper more examined life, honesty and raising children including what to do about Santa, questions about sex, and more.

Judi was kind enough to provide a PDF of the introduction and first chapter of her book, Would I Lie to You that you can download for free by vising https://www.experimentalhonesty.com/, clicking on the podcast section, and going to Judi’s episode, which is episode #4.
