“Boy, you was battle born.” In Episode 24, Kiara is joined via Zoom by repeat guest (Ethan) to discuss the fourth studio album from the pod’s first repeat band (The Killers): Battle Born (2012). The record becomes especially poignant for this pair of siblings as we reminisce on The Way it Was before COVID-19 and how this album is one of the most fitting soundtracks for life’s turning points. With aptly named Plain Killer cocktails in hand, Kiara and Ethan trade takes on the record’s themes of nostalgia, regret, and hope, all the while praising the band’s lyricism, their maturity since their debut in 2004, as well as their memorable music videos; from the sad bops to the cottage tunes to the grandiose Americana anthems. And along the way, we learn of Ethan’s second favourite animal, Kiara’s Brandon Flowers impersonation, and the importance of not letting the bastards get you down.
