In episode #29 of the Harbir Singh Podcast, I have the opportunity of discussing an urgent topic with Bhai Dharmveer Singh from Edinburgh. Bhai Dharmveer Singh shares his experience of what it's like to have a heart attack, the period leading up to the event, and his health transformation journey.
He is incredibly brave and honest to share such a personal experience and he is doing this for the sole, commendable purpose of helping others.
Heart disease is the biggest killer of males worldwide and south Asians are in a high-risk group because of their ethnicity.
We discuss this topic in-depth including smart tech and its uses in identifying heart attacks, the reluctance of men to get checked when they have symptoms, the diet that halved Bhai sahib cholesterol and helped him lose 2 stones (16kg), and how heart attacks affect everyone in our community.
Get tested - blood test for cholesterol (every 2 years) and blood pressure check every month.
Get insurance - It's important for us males to be responsible and get insurance if we have dependents.
Be safe - if you're suffering from any of the symptoms of heart attack (list below) it's important not to show bravado or delay and get checked ASAP.
Symptoms of a heart attack:
Chest pain, fullness, or discomfort.
Pain in your arm(s), back, neck, or jaw.
Stomach pain.
Shortness of breath, nausea, or lightheadedness.
Sweating.
Fatigue
I've linked to a video of another young, healthy, vegetarian/vegan, with no family history. These instances go to show that it can happen to anyone.
