Ryan Brook wants our help to eliminate the wild pig problem.

All types of pigs, including wild boars, have interbred and are causing devastation to our ecology. Sport hunting, partial trapping and other forms of harassment are ineffective, as the pigs learn from our behaviours and go further underground. They use the provincial parks to their advantage in the same way other wildlife has learned to do.

Current collar mapping has shown that wild pigs are spreading far and wide across the province. Wild pigs have been and are a major problem across North America, except in Colorado, where they have been trapped and hunted successfully.

Topics Covered:

  • Pigs are not native to North America and have no predators;
  • Sport hunting drives them deeper underground;
  • Being nocturnal, they cannot be hunted with spotlights, which are illegal in Manitoba;
  • They are hard to trap;
  • The entire Sounder group needs to be taken together;
  • Wise old sows are hard to capture and are likely pregnant;
  • There is a large collaring and tracking program underway;
  • Yahoos are individuals who shoot at pigs randomly or hunt by following the collaring helicopter;
  • Yahoos are a bigger problem and need to be educated on pig behaviours;
  • No one person can solve this problem but individuals can make it far;

This interview recorded April 4th, 2022.
