Though he has a demanding job as an opthalmologist, he spends at least 15 minutes a day gardening. He also farms unusual crops on his land, experimenting with tropical fruits and vegetables that are seldom grow in Southern Georgia. Fernando Mendez of Marview Farms in Arabi, Georgia, has come a long way as a farmer. As we discover in this podcast by Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College student Anfernee McDonald, Fernando Mendez overcame multiple challenges. Born in Cuba, Fernado was brought to the USA when he was only five years old. His father worked for a year in a labor camp in Cuba to earn the chance to leave. At age 29, Fernando was diagnosed with cancer and changed the way he and his family ate. Now he raises goats in a natural environment because he wants to provide his customers with high quality, natural foods.…

14:46Hayden Norman interviews Ross Kendrick, a peanut farmer from Turner County in South Georgia. Kendrick is a fifth generation farmer, and a leaders in the peanut commission and the farm bureau. He knows he not only has to cultivate peanuts and cotton, but that he also has to cultivate good relations with lawmakers in Congress, who determine the details of the farm bill. One of Georgia's senators recently spent some time with Kendrick, and Kendrick talks about how he worked to develop a relationship between farmer and lawmaker. "Listen to the Land" host Colton Creel travels to Pelham, Georgia, with Molly McKettrick to interview Anfernee McDonald, a student starting his own farm. McDonald entered farming after leaving the Marines, when he realized he wasn't the husband and father that he wanted to be. Now deeply religious, McDonald discovered that growing his own food to feed his family was one way he could connect with the natural world the Lord gave him. A horticulture student at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, McDonald found a new purpose in farming his 1.5-acre plot and raising chickens.…
Scott Hudson of Hudson Pecans in Ocilla, Georgia, talks about the hurricane winds that threaten pecan growers in the American Southeast every fall. Hurricane Micheal destroyed more than thousand trees in his orchard alone. But hurricanes are not the only threat to pecan orchardists. As Dr. Lenny Wells of the University of Georgia discusses, economic storms also threaten the livelihood of America's pecan growers. Heather Brasell of the Gaskins Forest Education Center and Dr. Vanessa Lane of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College release rare gopher frogs in a wetland in Irwin County, Georgia. The frogs are raised in captivity and released in the habitat of the gopher tortoise, the sandy terraine of South Georgia. The gopher frogs need wetlands to breed but the live their lives in the dry and sandy soil of the longleaf pine forest, residing in the burrows of the gopher tortoise. Brasell and Lane are part of an effort to restore the frogs to this habitat. Reporting the story is Sydney Doss, a student at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.…
