In this episode, I speak with Dean Emily Waldman about recent Supreme Court decisions. Last June, the Supreme Court issued several somewhat controversial rulings on issues ranging from free speech to affirmative action to voting rights. Dean Waldman who unpacks the decisions in three cases in particular, Moore v. Harper, which concerned whether the North Carolina Legislature was exempt from having the state court review is voting district map, Students for Fair Admissions v. North Carolina, which was the case that is seen as abolishing affirmative action and 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis, in which the court ruled that a woman had a first amendment right to refuse to create a wedding website for a same-sex marriage and shares how she thinks they are likely to impact us in the future.
About Our Guest:
Dean Emily Gold Waldman is a professor of law and the Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Operations at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University where she teaches Constitutional Law, Education Law and Labor and Employment Law. Professor Waldman joined the Pace faculty in 2006, after clerking for the Honorable Robert A. Katzmann, Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. From 2003-05, Professor Waldman practiced in the litigation department of Debevoise & Plimpton LLP. Prior to that, she clerked for the Honorable William G. Young, U.S. District Judge for the District of Massachusetts. She served as the chair of the AALS Section on Education Law during the 2011-12 school year, is a member of the Executive Committee of the AALS Section on Employment Discrimination, and is also a member of the Second Circuit's Judicial Council Committee on Civic Education & Public Engagement. Professor Waldman received the law school's Ottinger Award for Faculty Achievement in 2015 and 2018, the Professor of the Year Award from the Black Law Students Association in 2013, and the Goettel Prize for Faculty Scholarship in 2008.
