59: Alcatraz
Manage episode 440132008 series 3486385
Alcatraz is a small island located in San Francisco Bay, California, about 1.25 miles offshore from San Francisco. It is best known for the federal prison that operated there from 1934 to 1963, housing some of the most notorious criminals in American history, such as Al Capone, George "Machine Gun" Kelly, and Robert Stroud (the "Birdman of Alcatraz").
Before it was a prison, Alcatraz served as a military fortification and a military prison. Alcatraz prison was considered one of the most secure prisons of its time, thanks to the surrounding cold and strong waters of the bay, which were believed to make escape impossible. It was designed for high-risk prisoners who caused trouble in other prisons.
There were 14 known escape attempts involving 36 prisoners. One of the most famous escape attempts happened in 1962 when Frank Morris, along with brothers John and Clarence Anglin, escaped. Although their bodies were never found, it's unclear if they survived the treacherous swim to shore.
What you may have also guessed about Alcatraz is that the old penitentiary is also haunted AF! Oh yes, we definitely cover all of the creepy, spooky ghost happenings inside the prison walls during... and after the prison closed its doors in 1963.
Tune in and find out!
Stay Spooky, Stay Safe, and Sweet Dreams!
