This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for January 22nd, 2021.
New policies going into effect in the U.S. The administration is asking Americans to wear masks for 100 days and a separate order will go out mandating masks on airplanes, trains, and other public transportation. Plus, all travelers coming from abroad—U.S. citizens and permanent residents included—must quarantine after international travel for 10 days on arrival.
Public health experts say the U.S. government tried to get states to vastly expand their efforts to get the nation’s estimated 54 million people 65 and over vaccinated…and that was a bad thing. State and local officials continue to say there’s not enough to meet that demand.
Researchers warned the third lockdown appears to be having little impact on rates of COVID-19 in England, saying there’s “no evidence of decline” in the first 10 days of renewed restrictions. The current lockdown began Jan. 5 with bars, restaurants, most schools, and most shops closed.
China is racing to build a massive quarantine camp capable of housing more than 4,000 people after an outbreak of Covid-19 this month. A sudden rise in cases has alarmed officials and raised concerns ahead of the Lunar New Year when hundreds of millions are expected to travel to visit family. Construction began January 13th and the first section is already usable.
Another likely casualty of the pandemic, the Olympics. Japan’s government has privately concluded the Tokyo Olympics will have to be canceled. And that seems to be okay with Japanese citizens, 80% of whom don’t want the Games there, fearing an influx of foreign athletes will spread the virus further.
In the United States cases were down 16%, deaths up 14%, and hospitalizations were down 2% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since January 8th.
There are now 9,674,810 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, New York overtakes Florida, Arizona, and Georgia.
The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Webb, TX. Montour, PA. Forest, PA. La Salle, TX. Morgan, KY. Jim Hogg, TX. Richmond, VA. Mills, TX. Hyde, NC. And Hall, TX.
The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Rhode Island, Arizona, South Carolina, West Virginia, and California.
There’ve been a total 410,102 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.67%.
The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 740. Texas 463. Pennsylvania 246. Arizona 244. New York 228. Michigan 163. Florida 161. North Carolina 139. Illinois 138. And Tennessee 128.
Globally, cases were down 1%, and deaths up 23% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since January 11.
Globally, there are 25,522,371 active cases.
The five countries with the most new cases: the United States 193,758. Brazil 59,946. Spain 44,357. The U.K. 37,892. And France 22,848.
There have now been 2,088,783 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide.
