New research suggests Pfizer’s vaccine can indeed protect against two easier-to-spread variants of the coronavirus that erupted in the U.K. and South Africa. What makes it more contagious is a slight alteration on one spot of the spike protein that coats the virus. But most vaccines train the body to recognize that spike and fight it.
Don’t like shots? How about a nasal spray? The first UK clinical trials of a nasal spray proven to kill 99.9% of the coronavirus start today. The spray is designed to kill the virus in the upper airways of the nose so it can’t incubate and spread to the lungs.
The Bay Area has extended its stay-at-home order indefinitely as ICU capacity remains extremely low and new cases surge. The order was meant to expire Friday, but ICU capacity is at 13.7% and dropping.
Believe it or not, there are hospitals, health centers and pharmacies where vials of vaccine are being thrown away. The President of the Institute for Family Health said, "We all thought the real problem was going to be a shortage.” Last week, nurses in Harlem literally roamed the neighborhood looking for people eligible to get a vaccine because the health care workers they were supposed to go to skipped their appointments.
The U.K. was not kidding when they said they would enforce lockdown restrictions. A video surfaced showing no less than four police officers handcuffing a woman and taking her away for sitting on a bench outside. A statement said there is no specific rule on the number of warnings officers should give before taking action.
The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Morgan, KY. Jasper, TX. Tyler, TX. Barbour, WV. Braxton, WV. Kinney, TX. Stonewall, TX. Crane, TX. Southampton, VA. And Bethel Census Area, AK.
There are now over 9 million active cases in the United States at 9,050,569. The current Top 10 states by number of active cases: California, Florida, New York, Arizona, Georgia, Texas overtakes Virginia, then Missouri, Maryland, and Colorado.
The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are West Virginia, Arizona, Massachusetts, Tennessee, and Utah.
The infection reproduction rate is currently highest in Georgia, Washington, Wisconsin, Louisiana, and New Jersey. The states with the lowest reproduction rate are South Dakota, Michigan, West Virginia, Alaska, and Colorado.
There’ve been a total 374,072 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.69%.
The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 283. Texas 157. New York 145. North Carolina 142. Florida 106. Arizona 105. Pennsylvania 95. Illinois 83. Tennessee 81. And Massachusetts 77.
Globally, there are 23,935,269 active cases.
There were 725,999 new cases around the world in the last 24 hours against a high of 785,681 January 8th.
The five countries with the most new cases: the United States 213,453. The U.K. 54,940. Brazil 29,792. Russia 22,851. And Italy 18,627.
There have now been 1,934,096 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide. Up 27% over 14 days.
