Kit Marie and David Preece sit down with a cuppa and chat about the what is ‘home’, Sahara desert, data visualisations, amongst other things! In the world before YouTube and the internet, the opportunities to be inspired were different and rare. In 1995, Dr James Jackson gave the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures, called "Earth: An Explorer's Guide" on a relatively new idea called Plate Tectonics, and a young boy in Birmingham, called David Preece, had his view of the world changed. He didn't know he wanted to do Geography or study the world, but it started a journey that would end up nearly three decades later with this podcast. With the incredible support and guidance of Geography teachers, David read Geography at university and postgrad, before training to be a Geography teacher in South East London. He taught in schools for 13 years, as a teacher and Head of Department. He's been involved in UCAS and lots of school adventures; before moving to Initial Teacher Education at Teach First in 2021. Some links to things mentioned in the chat: - Professor James Jackson (https://www.esc.cam.ac.uk/directory/james-jackson) - Espresso & Geography with David Preece about the IPCC Reports (https://soundcloud.com/geogramblings/coffee-geography-espresso-1) - Coffee & Geography discussion with Louis Vis (https://soundcloud.com/geogramblings/coffee-geography-s02e08-louis-vis-uk-belgium) - Mary Myatt (https://www.marymyatt.com/) - Tataouine, Algeria (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tataouine) - Saharan sand (https://www.esa.int/Applications/Observing_the_Earth/Earth_from_Space_Sahara_sand) - Earth Nullschool (https://earth.nullschool.net/) - Flight Radar (https://www.flightradar24.com/) - Ship Tracker (https://www.vesselfinder.com/) Expand your geography network and connect with David via Twitter at (https://www.twitter.com/doctorpreece) and his blog (https://drpreece.home.blog/author/djpreece/) ==About Coffee & Geography== The aim of ‘Coffee & Geography’ is to get to know, explore and celebrate the diverse & intersectional range of people and their love for the world. We’ll have fun exploring all the myriad of ways that connects your life to geography. Wait – you don’t think you’re a ‘geographer’? Well, that’s ok! If you have a love and passion for the world then you probably are more than you know.
