One week down in the election race but it's a week that will reverberate across the rest of the campaign. US President Donald Trump's tariff plans came into full view yesterday prompting the Prime Minister to say this was not the act of a friend. The federal government says it will "continue making the strongest case" for the removal of US tariffs on Australian exports, but isn't putting a time-frame on its hopes of getting an exemption. Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton says he believes he could have secured a better outcome, in the wake of Donald Trump's self-declared liberation day of tariffs yesterday. With reciprocal US tariffs expected this week, Australia's beef and pharmaceuticals industries are believed to be in the firing line. On this issue at least, both sides of politics claim they are on the same page, with the Coalition saying that there'll be no negotiating on issues like the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. Meanwhile, the Coalition's been under continued pressure this week to release modelling backing up its claim that a gas reservation policy will drive wholesale prices down by the end of the year. The Opposition is also promising to speed up the approval of new gas projects if it wins office and is also taking its nuclear power policy to the election. And the Greens are proposing to spend one per cent of the federal budget on protecting the environment if they secure the balance of power in the next parliament. The party is releasing its environmental policy, which also includes an overhaul of environmental laws, an end to native forest logging and a climate trigger for major developments. Coverage and analysis of national and international events.…

Hear the latest on federal politics, as there is siesmic news overseas. The political ambitions of one of France's most recognisable politicians have been dealt a significant blow overnight. The Prime Minister says Labor will make price gouging illegal, while the Opposition Leader says he will be the one to crack down on supermarkets. But with both sides making major announcements on the weekend, how much detail are they really offering up? And the death toll continues to climb following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Myanmar, with about 1700 people now dead. The final figure is expected to grow, as rescue efforts continue to try and free people trapped under rubble. To add to the chaos, the military junta has continued air strikes over the weekend, despite calls for a ceasefire in the war-torn country. Coverage and analysis of national and international events.…
